Hitting

posted 2nd Aug
My 21 month old is hitting up a storm, mostly out of frustration. Of course I can;t hit back beciuase then he tries to hit me andtime out has minimal impact. I never had this problem with my oldest.

Now he is beginning to lie about big brother hitting him, He will come up to me, point at Connor and say he hit me, when of course amazongly that time Connor did not.

Any advise? I am at a loss and it seems to be getting worse, he is mostly only doing it to big brother or pretending to hit me when he is having attitude issues.

Books, websites and his doctor. They all say the same thing, don't hit back, be consistant with time out, give an exceptable behavior, such as saying we don't hit, we give hugs.

Still hitting. He pouts on time out. Comes over to me afterwards, I tell him we don't hit and tell him to go say sorry and he does and adds a hug. But then it happens again. The kid is on time out at least 6 times a day!

Yes, he gives me a blank stare. He understands perfectly but has a hard time using words to express himself. That is why I was shocked when he started the lying about getting hit by Big Brother. I think he saw the attention and wanted Connor to get in trouble for a change!

Our middle child-also our second- started with the hitting and we figured out spanking his butt only increased his hitting and also made him think that hitting was a way for him to get is way. So we minimized the spanking and stated lightly pinching the spot between his shoulder and neck....anytime he started acting up or swinging at us, we would pinch....and it got his attention and also slightly confused him, he didn't know what to do, but I can honestly say it has worked....he has seriously cut back with the hitting, he still has his moments, but all in all, has gotten better....hope you find a tactic that works! Good luck

Thank you for the idea! Spanking or hitting his hand has completely failed us as well. I will try this!

I don't know how verbal your son is but my sons 22 months old and he had a problem with hitting for a long time. Mostly to with his two older cousins (both of them have autisum) He don't his the other kids he plays with that don't have it. I sat down and just watched him for awhile and I relized he Hit more when he would try to get something that was either Taken from his from his cousin (who don't talk because of his autism) or when he would try to pick up a toy and they would hit him. So I relized he was hitting because his cousins hit him and so he thought it was ok to hit instead of talk it out. My sons VERY verbal says well over 150 words and can say 2-3 word sentences and he knows how to tell you how he is feeling or what he wants. So what we did was we started to see him hit we would stop him get down to his level and say "Cameron what do you want" Or something like that and if he would start to cry or throw a tantrum we would say "stop calm down and use words" and that has helped us 100%. Now we are coming into the problem of him not listening to the word No So we is now learning what a time out is and oh boy does he hate them! Thats what we did but ofcourse every child is different. Good luck and just watch and see when he does it more or if there is a actual reason he is doing it.

My oldest is and was very verbal at a young age. He got excepted into preschool at 20 months becuase of this. I didn;t have a hitting or biting problem with him and I believe it is becuase he could express himself. I think this is my majot problem with Mason. He understands everything, but refuses to talk unless it is on his terms. When he is acting out or fussing I always tell him to use his words, tell me what he needs and I get an even bigger tantrum. He hots when he is frustrated, angry or wanting attention. If brother won't paly with him, he go up and hit him, if he doesn't like what I am telling him he will raise his hand and pretend to hit me, if what he wants isn't coming across he will hit whoever. Other childeren he is fine with, it is mostly his family. It was much easier having a talkative child that you could discuss what was wrong and fix it vs. shear frustration and not wanting to talk! I am frustrated becuase he is such a smart little boy, but just does not want to use his words!
