Low Amniotic Fluid

posted 2nd Aug
I had a sonogram 3 weeks ago and my amniotic fluid was down to a 7. The scale is 5-25 so I was borderline. Yesterday he checked and I was at a 9. Which was better, but still cause for concern. I go back in 2 weeks to get checked. He said if its lowered I will need to go in for a c-section (I can't be induced due to prior csection).

Anyone else have this? I have read drinking water doesn't actually help, is that what you dr said? He didn't tell me to rest or drink water or anything. Is there anything I CAN do?

my friend is having twins.. one of her babies had low fluid the other did not... its corrected itself a bit ..enough to get her out of the danger zone.. so I know that it can fix itself..

I heard drinking water DOES help... Water and rest and further testing including ultrasound to rule out abnormalties w/ baby, maybe an amnio, etc to see if there are any other treatment options.

I had an amnio at 15 weeks and read on fluid levels and drinking and rest were the 2 main things that were suggested.

Sounds like what I thought, it either does or doesn't. But I guess drinking a ton of water will be good for me either way, so it won't hurt!

i was just in L&D because the baby and i were both dehydrated and my water in my amniotic sack was very low, i am strickly on water and bedrest... having low water will actually put you into preterm labor, i did me, when i went in my cervix was contracting.

I just had my u/s today and measured about 8.4 one full point down from last week. I started bedrest then and have been drinking lots of water. My dr said that if I reach below 7 they will hospitalize me and check my amniotic fluid levels everyday. He said the most important thing is to lay on your left side orall the way on your right sideto get the presure off the uterus.

Thanks for your reply! I hope you don't go below a 7!! I find out tomorrow if I have gone down any.. trying not to stress, but I am worried! I have definitely been trying to stay on my left side... but for sure switch to my right if I can't. I haven't been put on bed rest or told to drink more fluids. But since my checkup Ihave had a bad bout of diarhea and vomitting, and had a bad bloody nose. So I know I must be a bit dehydrated. I will do my best to drinks tons from now on!

I will check in tomorrow after my appt.

There is no evidence that drinking water increases amniotic fluid volume. The amniotic fluid is the baby's urine. The water that you drink does not go into your uterus.

Is the baby's weight normal? A 9 is a normal fluid level, so hopefully it stays about there.

I was measuring about 2 weeks behind, but at my last sono she was the right size. So maybe she got caught up and my fluid leveled out. I know that 9 is ok, it was the 7 that scared me (especially since they didn't tell me for 3 weeks). I am just hoping it isn't back down tomorrow.

Thanks for the comment about the water, I have heard it doesn't do anything either. So I really haven't pushed myself to drink a ton yet, but since I have had the bloody nose I know that for myself, I need to stay hydrated.
