Advice please...

My 7 year old, Matthew, is currently in NYC with his dad until Monday. He's really been looking forward to this trip for quite a while, and I was really happy that he was able to go. However, I just got a call this afternoon from the mother of Matthew's best friend,Andre, and she told me some pretty devastating news. Tragically, Andre passed away last night due to a seizure he had while in his bath (he had a disorder that caused frequent seizures). His parents figure that he must have seized, gone unconscious, and drowned. I know that Matthew would be devastated to learn the news, so I'm thinking that I should wait till Monday, when he gets back from his trip. He's asked that I call him at night to say goodnight each night that he's gone, though, and I don't want him to think that I was withholding information from him by not saying anything. What should I do?

I'd wait...it would ruin his trip & you'd only be withholding for a few days not forever. I'd definently wait.

ohh thats soo sad.i feel so bad for the parents of thet little boy.i would wait until hes home to sit him down an tell him the news because thats something really big for him.he is going to be hurt but i don think hes going to be mad at you for waiting to tell him when hes done with his trip.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'd hate to ruin his trip, and I think that this definitely would do it.

I have to ask...if they knew their son was prone to seizures, why was no one in the bathroom w/ him?? It sounds irresponsible to leave your son alone w/ water when you know he has a disorder like this.

yea, definitely wait... i mean, me and one of my bros was on a trip with my grandparents and my mom called randomly one day to tell us our puppy got hit by a car. and i was DEVASTATED, it ruined the whole trip 
and that was just our puppy dying, not my best friend or anything...

Yeah, I was thinking that, too. Of course, I couldn't say that or anything, but I was definitely thinking it. I guess, from sounds of things, that he hadn't had one in quite a while. Still, as a parent of a child who has had seizures before, I'd never let him out of my sight for long.

I would deffinitaly wait too. Especially if you have been who has taken care of him more than his dad!!! He will need his mom when he hears the news. His dad may not even know how to handle the situation. He is to young to deal with this so far from home!!!

Wow, I really think differently, because I would definately tell my kid.What if this is very life altering for him, and he just needs closure, that is what funerals are for?I don't know, it is a tough decision but if you don't allow him to make the choice he may blame you for a long time.Good luck whatever you decide, you know him best.

I would definatly want to talk to his dad about this. This way if the funeral is before they get back, your son could get back in time to say good bye to his best friend. Gotta have a little closure.
