Breastfeeding-- can I get my milk back?

posted 1st Aug
So at 3 weeks I quit brestfeeding my son because we thought he had a milk allergy-- it turns out it was reflux and I really want to get my milk built back up. He's now 6 weeks old so I haven't breastfed in a little over 3 weeks. Any tips or success stories? I've been pumping a little but I'm only getting drops at a time-- I don't even know if it's worth a try!

It can be done and since your baby is so young, I have high hopes for you.

It is easiest to relactate when your baby is less than 4 months old.

Not really an answer...

Your subject sounds like you are asking for a refund - "can I get my milk back"! I giggled for like a whole minute.

I agree with the above post, and also check out the La Leche League website. They have forums you can go to that are full of helpful mothers who have been through this as well. Also contact your local LLL to get more personal help. You'll need it!

I am currently relactating after not having bfed for 2 months. Adoptive mothers can bf. It's totally possible!

Good luck!

YES YOU CAN! Its going to take a lot of work and commitment but I did it and it all worked out. If you have an hospital grade breastpump (medela) great if not try to rent one. You will need the power of a good breast pump to get it going again. Drink TONS of water about 128oz a day and pump every hour from the time yo finish so if you pump at 1pm and finish at 1:30 then at 2:30 repeat the process. Dont get frustrated it will take a week or two to get anywhere but I was able to get my milk back in after 2 weeks. Good luck. I hope it works out for you.

Also put baby to the breast before he's fussy and hungry.  When he starts chewing on his hands or whatever.  Put him to the breast.  Do that before you give formula.  He'll have to work, so if you wait until he's really hungry, he will get frustrated and not try for very long.

A good idea for making sure you drink enough water is to drink a bottle of water every time you pump/nurse and also as much as possible otherwise as well.  It helps.

Oh ya also wanted to add when I relactaed my daughter was 9months old so if your baby is only 6 weeks you should have great luck. The older the baby the harder it is to get it back but I did. I hope it works for you. I love breastfeeding and cant wait to start again one last time.
