Birth Control = Abortion?

posted 1st Aug
So I was just watching a report on CNN about this.  Apparently they are trying to define birth control pills and IUDs as a form of abortion.  So the 12 million women across the country who are using these methods are suddenly going to be told that they are having an abortion.  Aside from the emotional damage that I think this would cause (even though my personal feelings don't reflect this, I still think it would be damaging to be told retroactively that my IUD that I've had for a year is considered an abortion) insurance companies wouldn't have to cover contraceptives if they didn't want to.  And pharmacy workers who didn't feel comfortable dispensing them wouldn't be required to.  Not to mention that there are enough unplanned pregnancies to begin with.  I feel that defining these methods as abortion would cause a significant number of people not to use them, and would thus increase the number of unplanned pregnancies.

What do you guys think?

Updated:  Here's the link to the CNN story that I was watching.  And FYI: It's the Department of Health and Human Services that is trying to do this.

Insurance would be spending a hell of a lot more on the millions of new pregnancies than they would just paying for the bc!

i agree with you. plus, how can you have an abortion without becoming pregnant? thats what contraceptives do, prevent pregnancy. no pregnancy = no abortion

I think that if insurance doesn't cover bc anymore it will be bad.

I think that using something to prevent a pregnancy is NOT the same as conceiving and terminatinga pregnancy. I personally believe it's irresponsible for an anti-BC agenda to guilt women into thinking they're "killing" potential children by being responsible and doing what they feel is necessary to avoid pregnancy.

I really don't see how in the world you can tell someone that using something that prevents pregnancy is the same thing as having an abortion. To me, that would be the same as telling men they're aiding abortion by masterbating...lol!

I agree with you!

I just don't even think it makes sense? BC is to prevent pregnancy, abortion is to prevent birth .

I don't think its abortion, I think abortion is termination after conception but bc prevents conception so its really not terminating anything.

thats the same argument they used back in the 60's or whenever they first started doing the pill. i wouldnt worry about it because it's all part of a womans right to chose and i dont think calling it that will make women want to not use it anymore.
