My son will be 3months on saturday...and he was two months early...lately I've been making sure he gets tummy time for about ten mins..well i'll lucky if he stays for 10 mins...he absolutely HATES it...I was just wondering exactly how long should I keep him on his tummy...he can lift his head when i'm holding him and when he's laying on his tummy on my chest..but he's hasn't gotten there laying on a flat surface..I know he's technically two months behind..i just want to make sure he's reaching milestones..and a decient time frame and yes i know all babies are different...what i really want to know is for all you mommies out there that have babies that despise tummy time what do you do?

Preston hated tummy time at first too. He still usually only last about 10 minutes on his tummy, then he cries. Just keep at it and maybe go for a goal of 5 mins. I think they'll eventually get used to it.

YOu dont really need a whole lot of tummy time at that age and its ok for him to hate it my neice did too. They will get used to it just make sure you are in site and talking to him play with him and his toys. He will get used to it and if he starts crying pick him up so he knows that you are still there then put him back down and its ok if he doesnt want alot to do with it. My son is almost 7 months and he doesnt really care to be on the tummy very long either.

My son was the SAME WAY. He was 10 weeks early. He's now almost 8 months old and meeting ALL of his 6 month milestones and MOST of his 8 month. He will be fine

My daughter is the same way! She can hold her head up while on my stomach or while I am holding her. But when she is on her tummy she burries her head and cries. My pedi told me that as long as she can hold it up while holding her, not to worry.

My eldest hated tummy time too. He doesn't have to be on his tummy to exercise the muscles that will help him roll, sit, stand, and all that. If he doesn't like it, he doesn't like it. It might be uncomfortable for him or it might frustrate him too much. At three months, he's really only a month old. He doesn't need tummy time now, wait till he's comfortable with it. Tummy time doesn't guarantee that he'll crawl. Sometimes babies never crawl, some sit on their bottoms and scoot instead of crawling. I used to grab my kids fingers when they were about 4 months old and gently pull them forward to exercise their neck and tummy muscles. But really, he's still brand new and doesn't necessarily need tummy time.

Paige doesn't like tummy time too much. She used to HATE it, now she just gets frustrated with it.
Paige is 6 months old today (3 months adjusted). She can only hold her head up for about 5 minutes during tummy time, then her neck muscles get tired, she does a face plant and cries LOL. She is alot better at holding her head up while in a sitting position, or like your son, when she is on my chest.
What I do is give her tummy time until she cries, at least 2-3 times a day. If it's only 5 minutes then so be it. Then we place her on our lap sitting or do chest-to-chest tummy timeand have her practice in those positions instead. We also got a Bumbo chair for her this weekend and she loves it... she is so happy sitting in it (until her neck gets tired, like tummy time!). Oh, she also likes to spend time in the Snugli (baby carrier) and has gotten really good at holding her head up there. If she gets tired she can lean back on the support strap, but still be upright. That makes her a very happy baby.

Because babies no longer sleep on their tummies, they pretty much all hate tummy time! For now, any position that puts him against gravity is good enough. Its also best if you do it several times a day for short amounts of time. You can use a bobby, your leg, the floor, or your chest as you mentioned. As he builds up the muscles, it'll help him not be so against laying flat on the floor. Good luck!
