Why not use adult stem cells instead of using human embryonic stem cells in research?
Human embryonic stem cells are thought to have much greater developmental potential than adult stem cells. This means that embryonic stem cells may be pluripotent—that is, able to give rise to cells found in all tissues of the embryo except for germ cells rather than being merely multipotent—restricted to specific subpopulations of cell types, as adult stem cells are thought to be.

No, that's like saying that a person can only receive blood donated by themselves. The adult stem cells don't just work for the person who donated the cells.

And how is it one dimensional to not want the government to waste money?

As far as "we went to the moon when people thought we couldn't" that was a waste of money too. What good has come of us landing on the moon? To show the world that we have the biggest set of genitals? Not a good enough reason to waste billions of dollars.

That's all SPECULATION. I'll believe it when I see it. And I hope when I see it, it's a private company who has come up with a cure using embyronic stem cells.

"Research using adult cells is 20-30 years ahead of embryonic stem cells and holds greater promise. This is in part because stem cells are part of the natural repair mechanisms of an adult body, while embryonic stem cells do not belong in an adult body (where they are likely to form tumors, and to be rejected as foreign tissue by the recipient). Rather, embryonic stem cells really belong only within in the specialized microenvironment of a rapidly growing embryo, which is a radically different setting from an adult body."

Because you think that something will never happen when you don't know that. It isn't a waste of money to give it to the research.

What do you think the government should pay for then? Since you think the study of the moon was stupid. Do you think putting up satelites was a waste of money?

They didn't need to go to the moon to put up satelites, and it would depend on what the satelites are for.

I am very strongly against the government wasting money.

Yes, they are ahead of it.. Think about 20-30 years ago. We didn't have many cases of invitro. And the adult stem cells are being used for blood disorders.

Any the possibility of it rejecting it, you get that when you donate an organ!

But with the research they HAVE done, they are finding that the embryonic stem cells are more likely to cause tumors and be rejected. That's probably a big part of the reason they haven't found any viable cures with embryonic stem cell research.

I just looked. The first satellite went up in 1957 and the first moon walk was 1969. Yes, we didn't need to go to the moon to put up satellites, but we have all these satellites now that we use to spy on other countries. Do you believe in that?

It is just hard for me to sit here and have someone tell me that I should just kiss my hopes and dreams to be normal again goodbye. You know? It is kinda like telling a woman on here that she will never get pregnant and she has been TTC for like 2 years. I mean do you know how that feels?

I'm not trying to be mean or anything. It is just that my sister and I have hopes for this to help us to be normal and whole again. (I am 6 months preggo and sitting here crying because I am freakin emotional.. lol)

The websites where I have looked didn't say anything about tumors. Only the one that you sent..

Sorry, it's not my intention to make anyone cry! ((hugs))

I guess I missed that part...is there something in particular you are waiting for stem cells to cure?

I have 6 (maybe more.. I haven't had an MRI since '05) herniated disks in my back. I have slight scoliosis. I don't know about my neck if that can be fixed, but it is starting to curve the other way. Doctors don't want to do the surgery on it because it isn't affecting my legs. My doctor told me that my only hope is stem cells..

Well, I'm very sorry to hear about that. And I really do sincerely hope that they are able to find something to help you. I just feel that adult stem cells are much more promising than embryonic so I think it is better if we focus our attention on the research that is more likely to provide positive results.
