Milk Share/ Breastfeeding

posted 27th Jul
So I was reading a magazine and say an article on mom that were having trouble breastfeeding. There was this one mom that got Breast milk from a bank and gave her son that milk because she was no able to produce milk herself.

So my question is would you give your baby someone elses Breast milk. And if you have how did it go

If I was not able to produce any milk and I could afford to get milk from a milk bank, then yes I would..

I donate milk. And to be a milk donor, you have to go through a rigorous process. It includes a ton of questions, permission from your OB and your pedi, and lots of bloodwork to test for drugs and blood born diseases. Also, they pasteurize the milk and test it for illegal substances.

I would donate milk. I was going to when I was breastfeeding my 2nd daughter (I had heard about it on the news), but there wasn't a place nearby that I could donate too. (closest one I believe was an hour away.) I might consider donating this time too.

I was reading that article too, the one in Baby Talk magazine right?

I would do it if I couldn't produce milk but only from a milk bank where the moms and milk are thoroughly tested. Breastmilk is the best food for a baby. I would feel horrible feeding it formula, JMO.

In the article it was talking about moms who nurse eachother's babies and stuff. I would not feel comfortable with that at all. You don't know what someone else has and nursing is such a special and personal experience.

Yes thats the article I read. I have been having alot of trouble with my supply and I am getting depressed because I can't breastfeed my son and i truly want to give him the best.

My question was not meant to upset you.. I know it's hard on a mother who can't breastfeed.

I was just wondering why drinking cow's milk is so different than donated milk, they are both lactating mammals. It was just a thought.

I can understand the displeasure in the thought of another woman providing nurishment for your child..

Why don'y you try drinking Mother's Milk Tea or taking Fenugreek? I drink the tea whenever I feel like my supply is low and the next day I have tons of milk. I also bought some Fenugreek to have handy just in case my supply goes really low or something but I haven't had to use it yet. The tea is sufficient. You should also make sure you're eating plenty. My supply drops if I don't eat enough. 2,500 calories a day is what is recommended.

ETA: Oh, and drinks lots and lots of water!

I wouldnt give them milk from a bank because its pasturized, thus all the live cells in it that are so good for fighting infections etc are killed. Instead, I would have a friend pump and donate.

I am actually going to be donating to my sister who is due a month after me. She has 2 autoimmune disorders and when she goes on one of the drugs after giving birth that is a "big no-no" for bfing mamas, I am going to pump for her babe. Ideally, she would like to get a big enough stash in the first few weeks/months after birth (both from me and from her...I am due almost exactly a month before her!) to give her child only breastmilk for as long as possible, but she is open to using both breastmilk and formula both if need be, or, getting milk donated from any of my lactating friends (she doesnt have any, all of her friends do not breastfeed  ) just depending on what happens.

I am a big believer in the power of breastmilk and will do anythign in my power to make sure my babies all get it in some way if I am for whatever reason in the future not able to provide it to them.

Because another lady is atleast the same species and human milk is for human babies. (Unless you ask Nestle of course )
