Toddlers and c-sections...

posted 27th Jul
I'm starting to get a little freaked out at the thought of coming home with the baby after my csection. My daughter will be a little over 17 months and she is very clingy. I'm so afraid that shes going to somehow hurt me. Have any of you ladies been through this and what are some tips you may have???

I plan on having my husband and/or mom take her to the park and things like that, but at the same time I dont want to completely avoid her and not show her any attention. Thanks in advance for any help!!

I'm worried about the same thing. I'm hoping to attempt a VBAC but only if the baby looks small enough to fit through my pelvis. Otherwise I'll have a scheduled c-section. My daughter is 3 and is very clingy as well. I'm probably going to have my MIL or my best friend entertain her here and there and just have my MIL stay to help for a week or two after DH has to go back to work.

I wish my doc would let me try a VBAC. My hubby will be home for 2 weeks, and my mom will be here for a week also, but I'm still nervous. Especially since she still wants me to rock her to get her down for a nap, but I know I wont be able to even hold her for awhile.

That would be my fear if I had to have a c-section. My daughter will only be 16 months and I don't think she would understand why she couldn't "climb" on me like she normally does. It's good you will have some help at first and I guess my advice would just be to keep her as busy and distracted as possible. Maybe try to get some cuddles in with her at nap-time when she is less likely to be active. If you have a boppy pillow you could try putting that on your lap while you rock her so your incision wouldn't be right there for her to accidently bump.

Start talking about how when the baby comes you're going to have a big owie on your belly and that she has to be very careful. Talk about it a lot and remind her often. When you come home from the hospital just keep reminding her to be very gentle. That's what worked with my son. Hope it helps!

I went throughthat this time around. I had a second c-section and we had to ajust at first. One thing that helped was that i was not allowed to carry my son for the last 3 months because of my hip problem. So he got use to the idea that i couldn't carry him. Also i started to play on the floor with him with cars or doing puzzles and playdoh and my hubby took him to the park. My hubby also took over the bedtime routine so i could rest and take care of the baby. It's rough but it's not for ever. The 1st time a took my toddler in my arms, 6 weeks after his brother arrived, he wouldn't let go.

I want to havea VBAC so bad. Doctors keep saying conditions have to be perfect, though. =\ I am worried if I have to havea C-section, too. I have a 3 year old that is super high maintenance and clingy and she loves to be held and climb. I had a C section with her and it is tough recovery!

I just went through this and I had the same fears. My daughter was 17 months when I had my son and my daughter was is used to climbing on me and such. My husband started doing her nightime routine about 3 months before the baby came to prepare her for the change. My husband got two weeks off after the baby and we planned to have family members come take her out at least once a day. I also got her a little slide and table for our backyard and saved them for when we brought my son home. I had markers, finger paint and playdoh as a special treat and we would try and keep her distracted with new things to do. Instead of holding her I would sit on the couch and hold the baby and she would sit next to me and "help". She was surprisingly calm and seamed to know she needed to be gentle.
All of these things worked great until my husband went back to work  Two weeks was not long enough and I should have planned for fulltime help after he went back. I ended up opening the incision cause I lifted her too soon. If I had it to do over again that is the one thing I would change.

Good luck.

Thanks that was very helpful. You basically went through the exact same thing. She will be 17 months and we are having a boy also. I've started the nighttime routine with daddy also. Hes the one that takes her upstairs now. I'm really worried about that 3rd week, when my momleaves and hubbygoes back to work. Maybe I will plan on having a friend come help me during the day. Thanks!!

That's what I would suggest. Especially if you have a two story like I do. The stairs killed me in the middle of the day. Even though she could walk up and down the stairs I obviously would hold her hand and she slipped a few times. Plus lifting her in and out of her crib for naptime. I wish I would have had my MIL come stay when hubby went back to work instead of coming when we had the baby.
