Being Induced w/ questions

posted 27th Jul
So I'm being induced tomorrow. Not really the way I wanted to go (would have liked to wait it out a bit longer) but after a talk with the Dr. about why he wants to induce me I understand and agree.

BUT I can't find anything on what to do before you go to the hospital. I mean there is all this stuff on when to go after your contractions start and when your water breaks but nothing on inducing. He just told me to show up at the hospital at around 10:30am.

So should I eat dinner or breakfast? I know you should eat once you are in active labor but what if you are induced?
Does it normally go pretty fast when you are induced or does it take a while?
What if I start to chicken out when I get there, I know that sounds lame but I'm kind of overwhelmed to be honest. I went in on Friday thinking he would say I want to see you on Monday and we would induce some time later in the week. But he just was like well I think we should induce, this is why, are you ok with that, ok I'll go call and set you up for Monday...

*deep breath* sorry, I think my head is still spinning.

One thing i learnt about being induced is that, its not some miracle magic that brings on labor straight away........ it could take time, it could take a loooong time but it could also be short

personally it took 2 days and 3 lots of gels before i went into labor but seriously dont stress, it will happen when it happens. I suggest eating regardless and just remember, you are doing it for your baby, to see your baby.. dont be a chicken and `harden up princess`

For my first induction I had to be at the hospital at 8pm so I went to dinner before and stuffed my fool face knowing I wouldn't eat until after the baby came. I had the cervidil put in around 10 along with an IV and a catheterand eight hours later, nothing had happened. They broke my water and gave my pitocin by 7 and my labor progressed well. My delivery ended up being a bit stressful- the cord was around his neck, he had to be vacuumed out and I tore badly but he was perfectly healthy.

With my second, I went in at midnight and the cervidil worked. I had my water broken and pitocin dripped again (no catheter this time). It was a completely calm and uneventful labor and Adam was born at 11am.

You should DEF eat before you go! i only had pop tarts at 5 am and i didnt get to eat until the next afternoon   i was SOO hungry! and after i gave birth everyone had mcdonalds!

Anyway i was induced and i started pitocin at 9 ish and my water broke at noon i was complete by 5 and started pushing at 9....she was not engaged and we were trying to get her down, well after an hour of pushing and my epi being gone and the monitors being taken off of me for her heart rate they said i could do a c section and i opted. Sophia was born at 1120 pm.

youll be fine mama i was SOO scared wheni got there! but until your water breaks its smooth sailing! then you get the epi and its smooth sailing again! mine sucked because it wore off after they asked me if i was ok with it but obviously there wasnt enough left.

Are you dilated at all now? That usually helps the whole induction process go faster.

I know what you mean about feeling overwhelmed - I went for my "routine" appointment at 36 weeks and he told me I had to be induced right then. I couldnt even go home to pack a bag! I had pre-e. I wanted to wait to go into labor on my own so badly but I knew the health of my child was more important.

I would eat before you go. Once you get there they wont give you anything and you'll be starving! I ate lunch right before my appointment (obviously no clue I would be induced within a few hours) and it was totally fine

Its not too bad. I was already 3cm when I went in so I was able to get my epi and my water broken shortly after getting there. My labor was a BREEZE. It was about 9 hours from the time I got to the hospital (which they still had to hook me up to the monitors and pitocin and admit me as a patient etc). I slept through the night and they woke me up at 4AM and told me it was time to push! Never felt the first pain.

Good luck - its very overwhelming and sooooo scary but you will be ok. Try to relax and let the excitement take over.

hi there, well i was induced with my son josiah who is now 6wks andi was the same about being induced. well it can take time. casue usually they would do an internal to seehow you cervix works and then they montior the baby for 20mins if that. then if you need the gels they would give you the first lot . the maxium of gels that they can give is 3 lots. and if that dont work then they will give you a drip[to bring the contractions on. butdont why you might only need them to break your waters and you willdo the rest just depends on your situation. i only had one gels and my body did the rest of the work. and the questioned about the eating part the hospital would usually feed you but it depends how quick the contractions starti hope that this information helped

Thank you ladies! This makes me feel better!

I don't think I am dilated yet. He didn't say I was. Just that everything is ready for her to come out, I'm just not having any contraction. The appointment before this one though he did say my cervix was soft.

Though he was kind of joking around after everything was set up, like I'll see you on Monday if not sooner.

I would have to agree with the earlier post that things go a little smoother if you are already dilating. I was induced with my first baby at 35 weeks because of pre-e. I was luckily already 2 cm dilated when I went in. I got there at 6:30 am, they broke my water at 7:00 am and started pitocin. Around 10:30 I got my epi and then by 3:00 it was time to push. Our baby girl was born at 4:10. I was never in any significant pain. I did not eat before going in, but I will have to say by the time I was through pushing all I could think about was eating.

Best of luck and I bet once you get there tomorrow you will calm down and go with the flow of things.

My Dr. actually told me NOT to eat at all before I got induced. I had to be there for 7am, and he said nothing after 10pm the night before. No water or anything. Because they want your stomach empty incase of any reactions to meds or anything. Which sucked because I was in labor for 10hrs, then they did a csection, and I couldn't eat anything till the next day! Good luck, hopefully it goes quick for you!

My midwife didn't say NOT to eat, but be careful because I could see it again (as in throwing up). I was starving so I had a biscuit from Mcdonalds...and I was okay, haha. Everyone labors different though. I have heard women getting induced and it not even working! As for myself, my induction was started at 7am. By 11am I was 10cm and had my daughter at 11:39am.

Good luck!
