Diabetes in Children

posted 26th Jul
My husbands side of the family has ALOT of diabetes They all didn't get it until later in life; and so far my husband still doesn't have it.

My son is 2 and his pediatrician told me one sign would be that his breath would have a strong fruity smell? The doctor said my son really didn't have signs of it and since everyone in the family was diagnosed in adulthood that it should be fine but if I wanted I could have the painful tests done on him. I elected not to, but i was curious if there were any other signs that could possibly be linked to the disease so i can watch out in the future.

I read that frequent urination and constantly being thirsty are 2 signs to look for.

Painful tests??.. I always just have a blood test done to check.. but yea, chances are if they got it later in life, then the same would probably occur (if it were to happen) to him.. Other signs are being really thirsty, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and numbness in hands, legs or feet..

He told me they were blood tests, but to a 24 mo, I would think it would be painful. I'll watch for all that. Thank you

lol..

My two first cousins havie it. The older one (boy) had it since age 2. His sister got it at 13, so both type one.

We lived together and I was always scared for them, they had to take insulin and I would watch them give themselves shots.

It runs in our family as well, very heavily.

does your husbands family have type one or type two ?

Type two runs in my family, but it's pretty difficult to get it if you don't have a history of obesity. A kid wouldn't get it unless they were severely obese and had been for years.

If it's type one then there's a chance he could get it. I have little experience with type one, but lotttts with type two. About four people in my family have it.

My cousin was diagnosed at like 15. My aunt came home and found the kitchen torn apart ...My cousin was sitting on the floor with the sugar canister in her lap and she was eating it with a spoon. She has juvenile diabetes.
I think frequent urination is a big sign. I have three cousins with diabetes and they all do the strangest things when thier sugar levels are off.

Honestly I'm not sure.(i know that sounds bad) Being around his family is the first time I've ever been exposed to it. My FIL is the only one who takes insulin shots. But practically all the males have it. I think the ones that develop it were all over weight when they were diagnosed.

Out of My mom , Dad 2 brothers, and 1 sister. 4 of us have diabetes. Fruity smelling breath is a sign of Diabetic ketoacidosis. Not a symptom of diabetes. There is a chance that your child may never get Diabetes. I have had it since I was 22 and take 5 shots of insulin a day. And the test would be a simple blood test.

Thats reassuring, I think I'll wait until hes alittle older to have him tested. Thanks so much!

I've been a Type 1 Diabetic since 1995, I was 9 years old. Go through with the blood tests and just be sure. A little poke now can save a lot of long term problems. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.
