Castor Oil

posted 26th Jul
So I went into L&D Thursday afternoon because I thought my water was leaking. After 2 hours of steady contractions, they sent me home. They called it "labor to get ready for labor". I guess pre-labor or whatever. Well anyway, before I left, the nurse suggested some home remedies to get labor into gear. The typical... walking and sex. And then she suggested I try castor oil. I'd heard that its not recommended anymore, but this is a 33 year OB nursing veteran who should know her stuff. Just wondering if any of you have tried castor oil, and what was your success rate?

You will be on the toilet forever! The only thing it really does is give you Diarhea, my sis would do that so she could stay home from school.

I don't know about the success rate, but the likelyhood of you getting bashed by this is in the 90% range.

Ehhh... This may open a can of worms. Castor oil can be damaging to the baby, by possibly causing them to have a bowel movement in utero which can cause lung issues when they swallow it. BTW, there a LOT of ladies here that may get VERY upset over even suggesting such a thing. Besides, the chances of it helping anyone go into actual labor or not that great. It will gove you the mad shits which theoretically causes contractions but is more likely to make you sick and dehydrated. Walking and crounching and rotating your hips works tho. When I went into L&D (on my due date mind you) I was a 3 and they were planning on sending me home, but I walked around the room and did squats and rotated my hips and went from a 3 to a 5 in an hour.

i don't know i was talking to a lot of the woman on here and they say NO castor oil. but i read online that it does not increase the risk of a bowl movement from the baby it just makes the mom really sick like having to go like crazy. i would never try it though i won't take any risk of endangering the baby, because on the site they said limited studies done... i wouldn't do it if i were you just look up some info on google.

DONT DO IT!!!! Seriously, do some research! It can harm you and the baby. The baby will come when the baby is ready. Why would you want to endanger your baby because your getting impatient?!

Didn't do a thing for me. I didn't even have to use the bathroom. It made my bowel "looser" but not diarrhea and definitely no baby. Oh well. Do whatever you want to do. Your body.

I wasn't planning on actually using it. I was just curious what the success rate for other women is. I have a doctor appointment on Monday, and the OB already is planning to schedule me to be induced if he isn't here yet. I just know that its been suggested to me by a lot of women. My mom used castor oil in all 5 of her pregnancies, never had any babies who passed meconium and we were all healthy as could be. I know a lot of midwives still suggest the use of it over medical interventions such as pitocin and cervidil.

I am feeling pretty good actually... But my little boy is being jsut like your daughter, still no progress or signs of labor.. I have been to the Dr 3 times this week, and I go again on Monday, and then again on Tuesday (I have a REALLY cautious Dr.), and they have me set of induction on Wed... I am so nervous i dont want to be induced at all, but at the same time I am excited to finally meet my little guy!
