Should the government be allowed to regulate people naming t

**Sorry, the title was too long... The question is "should the government be allowed to regulate people naming their children?**

Another article that is on the subject of the government allowing to regulate parenting..
This poll is the same as one found here: http://news.aol.ca/article/judge-orders-girls-odd-name-change/289664/.To state what is obvious, it is aboutan expectant couple who sold the 'rights' to name their baby daughter to a radio station for a $100 gas card. The child was named 'Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii'.

The article:

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.
Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.
Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.
The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.
"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."
The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K'' instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.
In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.
Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.
New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Clarke said officials usually talked to parents who proposed unusual names to convince them about the potential for embarrassment.

These are just some side stories on the same subject, that can be found in the picture gallery on the link.

-In 2007, Sweden refused to allow a couple to name their daughter "Metallica."

-Last year, New Zealand authorities blocked a couple's bid to officially name their new son "4Real," saying numerals are not allowed.

-Germany has laws against naming children Adolf Hitler and Osama bin Laden.

-One Michigan boy and one Texas boy have been named ESPN after the sports network based in Bristol, Conn.

Do you believe that governments can step in and refuse to allow a certain name? What about ruling that a child has it's name changed, after it has already been officially named?
And lastly how do you feel about the couple who sold the rights, as well as people that name their children 'inapropriate' names?

I think they should not be allowed to sell the rights to their baby's name or name their baby something in order to make money. That should be against the rights of the child. Because that's like profiting off your baby..

As much as I hate some of the names people give their children the government should have nothing to do with it. Yes, I feel bad for the child but it's the right of the parents and those rights shouldn't be taken away. The child can opt to change his/her name later in life and even ask that his friends and teachers call him/her by a different name.

I read this yesterday and DEFO the government should regulate people naming their babies because some of the names are just a joke and they cannot be serious!! I mean calling your baby 'Tula does the Hula from Hawaii' were her parents pissed or high when they decided this name!? Just plain stupid.

i think there should bea common sense to naming. it's cruel and unusual punishment to name your kid something super crazy like that because it WILL affect their job eligibility and employment when they're older as well as affect their college enrollment and any other type of legal item. its foolish and retarded to do that to your child so yes, i think in extremem cases like these, it should be okay.

As long as its not numbers. I do agree with that law. Naming your kid 142342403 would be degrading humanity but other than that as you can tell from my profile that I agree there should not be a law against whatever you wanna name your kids.

Do you ladies think that swear words should be refused?
Yes while the child can change it later on in life, and have friends and teachers address them as something else, having the name "shitpiss" could probably do a lot of damage to the child's mental health!

In reply to what AlyssaGullionsaid "i think there should bea common sense to naming." I totally agree! I agree with that statement, even if you take out the word "naming" and replace it with almost anything.
Sometimes (and other times I think I'm becoming numb to it all) I am so shocked that someone would not have enough common sense to do certain things. Some people are CRAZY... lol.

Personally, I think there is an addition hardship on the child because of certain names (not to mention the paperwork they'll have to do when they can legally change their name), but it's not my choice what kids get named.

Sex Fruit?! What are some of these parents on when they decide on these names?

I honestly can't imagine a parent naming their child "Fucktard" or something like that but I'm sure the child would be called something else that he/she chose.

I think some names ppl come up with a beyond stupid to downright mean, but I don't think the government has any right to dictate that. IMO it falls under free speech.

And I do agree, I have no idea what would ever make anyone name a child Fucktard, or anything like that. I was just pointing out though, that people seem to pick really bad names sometimes ("Number 16 bus shelter??") and not only would a child have an AWFUL name if it was a swear word, you wouldn't even be allowed to say it, in schools and other public places...

What about slang, being used as names? Or racist terms? Again, I don't know who the hell would ever name their baby something like this, but what if someone picked the "N word" as a name??

I have heard of ppl naming their child "Shithead" and pronounce "Shi-theed" like the sound in three... Its retarded and has to be bad for a childs mental health, but if your parents are that dumb, I think you will need therapy anyway, name aside.

Wow! Do you know much about that name? I mean, do you know if it was given as a swear word, or was it always meant to be "Shi-theed", and is maybe a name in a different language, or culture?

I would have to look it up... It was in the US, but I am not sure if it could have been cultural... My understanding was the ppl were pretty ignonrant and apparently did not know that most ppl would look at that and think "Shit Head"
