scratching baby

posted 25th Jul
Lydia keeps scratching me while she's nursing.  To the point that she's breaking skin like crazy.  I clip her nails every couple of days but she's still breaking skin.  I've been telling her "no, that hurts mommy.  touch nicely" and taking her hand and kind of petting me with it.  So she can learn to be gentle.  What else can I do?  My breasts and arms look like I got in a fight with a cat!  She got me good just a few minutes ago and I screamed because I wasn't expecting it.  It scared her and I felt bad, but dang does it ever hurt!!!

that's a good idea, but she's six months and can take them off.     she's actually taken them off since birth.  Plus, she's always done it, she's just getting more aggressive and breaking skin now.  So, I don't know if it's a stage or what!?  I will try it.  Hopefully it works.

I would do the same thing I did when my daughters bit me-put her down and say no that hurts-wait a minute and resume feeding.I would continue this-she will get the point but you have to be consistent.

can you kinda trap one arm under her/ under your boob and the hold the other one down by her side? My daughter does that sometimes too, I just remove her hand, tell her no firmly and put it back down by her side.
I dont know if it will work for you but so far its been helping me.

I do that, but she scratches my side when I trap her arm between my side and arm.  LOL

I think I will just have to be persistent and stop nursing for a minute when she does it!  She does it when she is falling asleep mostly.

Edan does this too.   He doesn't break skin but it still hurts pretty damn bad.

Sadie scratches all the time. She does it to my husbands face or my back when she sleeps in bed with us. I normally give her something to hold onto-a blanket, lovey, or some sort of small soft thing. She normally starts scratching that instead. Good luck mama Im sure youre ready to stop being scratched to death!

I'd suggest putting socks on her hands. Moira's hands are too small for the mittens and that's what we had to do to stop her from scratching her eyes. she actually sticks them in her eyes and i guess she cut the inside of the right one because we're constantly cleaning gunk out of it and off of it and only her right eye is that way... you could always add draw strings or something to the mittens too (along with keeping her hands pinned) and tie the strings so that she cant take them off but you can. I've thought about doing that so that we were using the mittens instead of her socks but i don't have my sewing kit since the move--i think someone stole it

the eye thing could also be a blocked tear duct.  that's pretty common

I should try that again and be consistent w/ it.  I used to do it.  She has a baby doll that has bunny ears and she used to play with it's ears but she started throwing it every time I gave it to her when she was scratching me.  Apparently taking chunks out of mommy's breasts is more satisfying!
