he only sleeps in his swing!

posted 25th Jul
anyone else's baby only like to sleep in their swing?? everytime he falls asleep and I lay him down in the bassinet or pack n play he wakes up with in a few minutes and starts crying. he almost 8 weeks old and I think there has only been one or two times where he slept in his bassinet for an hour or more.
so everynight I bring his swing in our room and let him sleep there. he sleeps pretty much through the night now.. I think he just likes the motion, plus if he starts to wake up, it will rock him back to sleep.
I don't know what to do, I feel bad always having him sleep in there, but IDK what to do. I want to try to break him of this habit sooner or later..

Try to break it as early on as possible. My son slept through the night in his crib, but ALL of his naps were in his swing. It was really convenient for the first 7 months, but then he started getting too heavy and he would try to pull himself out of it. It took so much to get him to start napping in a crib. There were alot of tears, from his eyes and mine. I would say just nib it in the bud before it gets too out of control.

HA---I *wish* Adrien would sleep in his swing ( or anywhere for that matter!).  He will only sleep if he is with me in our bed. I know that there are a lot of mama's that are a fan of co-sleeping.... but he is killing me! I'm wondering how to break this habit as well....

i wouldn't feel bad its what he likes. i would just be careful because if u plan on letting someone else watch him it might be a problem.

It's just a phase: he'll grow out of it soon! I think Will was done swing sleeping by the time he was 4-5 months old, about the time when we started a bed and bathtime routine along with sleep training.

my baby was the same way until I gave her no choice to sleep in the crib since eventually they will outgrow the swing so thats not a place you wanna get them used to sleeping. It only took 3 days of putting her in the crib after every feeding and she would cry for like 20 mins and fall asleep. You can try diff sleeping positions like on his tummy while you rub his back if you dont like the idea of hearing him cry

I know , and I feel really bad that I let him sleep in there but I don't know what else to do, he only likes to sleep in his swing or with me..
I would co-sleep but I know Mike would roll over on him,
plus then it'll be hard to get him to sleep alone when I decide to stop

ugh lol

I would just make the switch, even if he doesn't like it. Try it for a few days and see if he adjusts. Will be hard on both of you, but you have to break the habit before he gets much older   My daughter used to only sleep if I was holding her, and when I put her down she would wake up in minutes. I just kept putting her down until she got used to it... (was getting unsafe, because I was so tired I kept falling asleep holding her) By 6 weeks old she was pretty well adjusted and knew even if she was down, I was right next to her.

that's what I do, lay him on his belly and pat his back and he'll sleep but once I stop he wakes up.
if I put him in his bassinet and he starts making noise I rock it with my foot ( it's next to the foot of our bed) and he'll fall back alseep... but then he starts crying after I stop.

and I know what you mean, at his 5 week appointment he was almost 24 inches already, I swear he's going to outgrow that thing in like a month lol he's feet are already at the edge of it

he's only 8 weeks, I say let him 'swing away'. He will grow tired of it on his way.

Aidan has gotten a lot better about going to sleep in his crib, but I know he prefers the swing... he tends to wake up a lot more frequently if he's sleeping anywhere stationary. He used to ONLY sleep in his swing too... but like I said he is getting a lot better about it now that he isn't so dependant on being rocked to sleep and is now able to kind of entertain himself to sleep/back to sleep... like by watching more things, playing with his fingers, now that he's able to pay attention to things longer it's easier for him to drift off to sleep without getting distracted. I think it's kind of a phase a lot of babies go through... and grow out of.

I've noticed that if baby's are used to being rocked, either in a swing or their parent's arms, it's hard for them to sleep on their own w/out any motion. At least that's how my son was when he was a baby. He loved being rocked or tapped on the thigh until he fell asleep.

yeah he does that do, I always end up falling asleep with him on my boob lol there was a few days where he would not sleep unless I held him.

Cadence slept only in her swing for the first...um...4 months? Something like that. Actually, for the first 4 weeks, she'd only sleep on my chest, so we camped out on the couch (had a recliner on both ends) for the first month. A mommy needs some sleep, too! I discovered, though, that the reason Cadence wouldn't sleep in her pack & play or bassinet was because they were both too small...that girl moves in her sleep!

I would suggest trying a full-on crib. He may just want more wiggle room. When I put Cadence in her crib for the first night, she slept 7 hours without making a peep! She moved, but she stayed asleep. Your beeb might have the same problem.
