Tropical Mama's

posted 25th Jul
Or anyone else....

I have never lived ina tropical climate before during the rainy season and the mosquitos are OUTRAGEOUS! How do you keep them off of your baby? They get in to our house and they're everywhere. I want to avoid putting repellant on him because i'm afraid it will get in to his mouth. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Uggh we try not to go outside in the evening or early morning because that seems to be when they're the worst... of course during the middle of the day its too damn hot... and the worst part of a tropical climate is they NEVER go away... it doesnt get cold enough to really kill them off so they pretty much breed all year round... oh and try to eliminate any standing water around your house... it only takes like less than a teaspoon of water for them to breed in...

bug zappers I have a like 3 of those around my house. We aren't really in the tropics but mosquitos grow BIG here like dinosaur big (ok maybe not that big). I don't know if you like or don't like the way citronella smells but I burn 1 of those candles inside. Like a really small table one. It seems to help. I'm really phobic about west nile virus and such. My oldest is like a buffet bar for mosquitos and she doesnt even try. A mosquito will travel up to 30 miles fora meal. Crazy huh.

i have the same problem when im staying with my parents in Spain...

i got a thin net and chopped it up so it went over Alanas play pen, cot, pushchair etc so no matter what she was in she would be covered.

i didnt start using repelant on her until she was about 3.

uggh me too!! I can't figure it out but ever since I was little I would come in from playing and be COVERED in mosquito bites... and I still get that way!! I'll wake up in the morning and have severeal and nooneelse in the house will have a single one... not even my hubby who's in bed with me!! I gotta google and see if I can figure out why I'm so tasty...

edited to say: does your daughter by any chance have an O blood type?? I found out I was O- when I was pregnant and just read this:

Some scientists suggest that certain characteristics attract mosquitoes, thereby leading us to have more bites than others. Some of the top candidates: the amount of carbon dioxide in the breath, pregnancy, body temperature, alcohol and odorant markers based on blood type.
Blood-type markers are chemicals released by people of a specific blood type – so if someone with AB blood emitted a marker, it would be different than that released by B. One study found persons with Type O blood suffered more mosquito landings because of the odorant markers they emit than any other blood type, making their juices a hot commodity for blood banks, as well as Asian Tiger Mosquitoes, which carry West Nile Virus. Not only were Type O’s more likely to be landed on, but the study found that for any blood type, people who secreted a chemical marker about their blood type through their skin (both blood type and secretor status are determined by genes) were bitten much more than non-secretors; 24 percent in the case of the Type O’s. Other researchers estimate about 15 percent of the population, based on their genes, don’t emit chemical markers of their blood type through their skin and saliva, so something else has to be calling the mosquitoes to them.

Found that extremely fascinating and ever since I learned my blood type I had a sneaking suspicion thatcould be afactor since it's so rare and I don't know anyone else who gets eaten alive quite like I do...

Thanks guys!

They have some citronella incense at the local store, maybe i"ll pick some up. We do have a net that goes over his pack and play, thank God. That keeps them away at night at least. The problem is, we have to leave our doors open during the day because we only have AC in the bedroom.

They love me too! I have to wear pants and socks every day or else they tear up my legs. It's insane!!!

When I lived in the Phillippines when I was younger my dad would use a mosquito net over where ever I was. And they always burned those swirly green things...I don't remember what they are called but they have them here too. (in U.S.)

I got Megan a repellant band which you can clip onto her stroller or whetever and it keeps them away. My friend used one in the dominican republic and said they worked wonders. Everyone else got attacked except the baby.

These are the wristbands although its best to clip it onto the stroller (so baby doesnt eat it) and it works just as well

It works much the same way as a flea collar

I have always wondered about it... oh it also says that pregnancy can cause you to be more attractive to mosquitos because your temperature is on average 1.26 degrees fahrenheit more than normal and you release 21% more carbon dioxide... yikes!!!

LOL...too funny

Thanks for the input! I'll have to get some of those things too. Having things shipped here is kind of a PITA, but I'll figure something out. I sit under my mosquito netting on my bed with him for like half of the day. Maybe it's fun for him.... like a fort! haha

Make sure you don't have any standing water around your house. That's where they breed.
