Swelling. (doctor wrong?)

posted 23rd Jul
I know it is normal to swell.

My doctor has told me that i have a "mild" case of PREECLAPSIA, and has been watching me closely. for the last 4 months of my pregnancy the swelling just gets worse and it gets into my hands and my face. it just WONT go away, and it wont really go away with propping my feet up. my feet started turning a purple-ish color so i went into the doctor today. i'm like almost 37 weeks pregnant, and my BP rose a little bit. i also have PUPPP (the allergic reaction to pregnancy thing which makes you all itchy and stuff) and carpal tunnel in my hands. i asked him if he would induce me early, because of all the complications, the water retention, etc and he told me it is normal in pregnancy and i would just have to stick it out and they wouldnt induce me unless my BP got really super high!

i understand that people have some of these issues, but it isnt normal swelling and i keep trying to tell him that. my face and hands arent supposed to stay swollen, and my feet barely go down when i prop them up or wear those special socks.

i heard that its bad for your kidneys in all this. ive tried everything, the swelling wont go down and it has gotten to the point where i cant even fit into my SHOES. my ankles look like they're smugglin little debbie cakes, and sometimes spots appear on my hands...

i just DONT know what to do! i dont want my condition to keep getting worse and this dickhead not do anything about it.

I don't know what to tell you.. I guess just keep bringing it up to him. Make sure he KNOWS HOW uncomfy you are. I had carpol tunnel w/ my daughter and that sucked.

I know the swelling gets really annoying, but as long as your blood pressure isn't super high, there's really no danger to you or the baby (it's just extra water retention). There can be a lot of complications with the baby if you were to be induced even a little early and so there's less of a risk to just wait it out for now. I think it's just better to let the baby come on their own.

my hands have been slightly swollen for like 3 months solid now...I haven't been able to wear my wedding ring, and I have carpal tunnel realy bad, and my feet have been puffy for at least a month and a half solid as well. My midwifes tell me everything is A-OK...my bloodpressure is great, and everything else is perfect as well, I am just retaining a lot of water. Some women do.

my doctor didnt do shit about my swelling either. it got to the point where if you press in my foot or hand, you could see your finger indent for like 10 mins.. keep bugging him about it

I also had swelling like that. i could not wear any shoes but flip flops because m right foot was so big (I had a winter baby so I had to wear them in the rain if I went anywhere). My doctor did not induce me untill my due date that was only because my bp went up a little at each appt the last 4 weeks.

it isnt normal swelling though. ive been around plenty of people pregnant, and my feet are atleast 2x the normal size. i went to the hospital like 2 weeks ago and the doctors freaked out about my swelling and its even worse then it was then. i understand that you should wait before you have your baby, but my point is is that i'm due soon, and atleast he could induce me in early august. my BP goes up everytime i see him, and once it was way too high i know. my hands get so swollen i cant even close them... and ive been staying off my feet. it just doesnt do anything for me.

If you have pre-e nothing will help the swelling except having the baby. It's just a part of pre-e and there isn't anything that can be done.

Are you on bed rest or medication or any kind of treatment for pre-e? The only CURE is to give birth, but are they helping you to control it at all?

If you really want to be induced, you can ask about a method called a Foley Bulb Catheter. (When you Google this, remember that it will go in your cervix, not your urethra, 2 different kind of Foley Bulbs.) It is a drug free inducement that may or may not be followed by Pitocin. But with pre-e doctors try to avoid drugging you up or doing anything that can put you at risk with your BP. Anyway, I have super high BP and they were going to do a Foley for those reasons (but I just got a bit more complicated and have to consider a c-sec now) and my doctor was really confident that a Foley was the way to go with any BP concerns. It's worth asking about.

As a side note, my doctor SWEARS a Foley isn't as bad as it sounds. I don't know if I believe her, but she swears it. LoL! (Basically, a catheter they stick up your cervix and then inflate with saline like a water balloon. It forces you to dilate and hopefully irritates you into labor. All drug free)

omgg i had a winter baby also.. i had to wear them to the hospital at 6:30am (when i went in to have my c-section) in like 30 degree weather. i froze my little toes off..

The swelling is a very common complication or symptom with pre-e. Not typical in a normal pregnancy, but extremely common for your condition.

Pre-eclampsia can get bad really fast. If your bp was a little high and you have been diagnosed with it, why arent you getting induced?! I lost a little girl to pre-e.

Also about the foley catherder....not to scare anyone but that shit HURTS!!!!!! I had to get one bc I was being induced at 0 cm and they wanted it to start me off. Eh eh eh eh eh!

it isnt fair because my sister had the same doctor and he induced her 2 weeks early.. and she didnt even have any problems with her pregnancy! and i mean i'm having all kinds of problems and i already went into pre-term labor but they stopped it. he said it was a mild case of PC and that it wasnt anything to worry about as long as my BP stays okay. well my BP keeps GOING up, and it has gotten to where living day to day is just a hassle. my whole body constantly itches, and my hands feel like someone is stabbing them with a long bladed knife. to top all that off, it feels like 50% of my weight is found in my feet anymore. it is getting to the point where they are turning different colors. i really want to go into labor bad, ive been having the braxton hicks contractions but that is about it... i'm just praying god will take away this misery from me, because it all hurts really badly. you can stick your finger to my foot and the impression will stay there for 5/10 minutes.  it sucks and i'm always in pain. not to mention the killer headaches i get sometimes. ugh

if your bp keeps going up then that should be the reason to be induced. i had every symptom like you except pre e and every visit my bp would be high for the past 3 weeks so this last visit she sent me straight to the hospital to have testing and be induced the next day. so everything is slowly going back to normal (swelling). i would def push the bp thing above anything else because your health is just as important as the baby and havin high bp is not good for either of you. my baby was born at 37 weeks last thursday and he is perfectly healthy!!
