A version or C-section??? Advice please...

posted 23rd Jul
I have had a high amniotic fluid level since about 30 weeks, when I started measuring big. At that point, when I had the U/S to check my fluid, Demitri was head down. He continued to stay head down until approximately 34 weeks when he decided to flip over and go breech. (For those who don't know, when the mother has high fluid, the baby has more room to move around- therefore more room to flip over and go breech.)
Today, at 35 weeks and still breech, my doctor told me that I need to weigh my values and decide if I want her to try and flip the baby by doing a version, or schedule a c-section. I need to let her know at my next appointment, on Wednesday the 30th. I am so not ready to have to make this decision, and never thought that I would have to (but I guess, who does?)

My options:
1) A version
2) A C-section

1) With a version, since my fluid level is high it could be easy to turn him, but at the same time, he could just flip right back over if he wanted to. I have read that versions are only effective about 58% of the time and can be pretty painful.

2) C-sections are obviously a major surgery. My doctor said that it always takes much more time to start feeling better after a C-section than it does after a vaginal delivery. The hospital stay is longer.

At this point, I am leaning towards trying the version. I really really really want to deliver vaginally. With a C-section I think that I would kind of feel cheated.
I am really freaking out about this whole situation. I never wanted to have to even consider having a C-section. I would love some advice from you ladies. I know that it comes down to what my husband and I decide, but I would LOVE the input from BG. If you have had a version or C-section before, please tell me about your experience.

Thanks, mamas!

Honestly I would just go with the C-section.

Sometimes the other route can be extremely dangerous and like you said, it is VERY painful

I would go w/ a section. I've had 3 and this will be my 4th one. I've heard that trying to turn the baby would be very painful and sometimes doesn't even work so your back at square one.

I personally think I would try doing a version. I would probably go thru great lengths to avoid a c-section. Why not try that that way you know you did everything you could to try doing things naturally.

I would try to flip him, and if all else fails you'll have a c-section but at least you'll know you tried to have a vaginal delivery.

I would definately lean more towards the external version too. Make sure you discuss with your doctor exactly how they would go about doing it though. I would only do it if it were performed in a hospital with the baby's heartbeat being monitored at all times. I would also request that the procedure be done later in pregnancy (like 39 weeks) so that I could be immediately induced if he was successfully flipped. It would also be helpful to have it done in later pregnancy so that if by chance the baby went into fetal distress from being prodded at they could perform an emergency c-section and the baby would be fully developed. It's all up to your doctor as to what his policy is so I wouldn't be deciding anything until asking exactly how he does it.

I would go with the csection. I had one 3 weeks ago, and really its NOT that bad.

Yes, it is a major surgery, and recovery for everyone is different, but I was walking around just fine by day 3, it hurt at first..but i've heard it does with a vaginal too.

And theres the risk of going through the version and it not working ANYWAYS and whinding up with a csection anyways, so why not just cut out the middle man?

from a mom who had a cesction after 28 hrs of labor because baby was turned sideways then turned face up - i would say try the aversion (not version) - - my Ob didnt do any checking of baby's position and IF he had I would have had him try to avert her around.

I'd say try the aversion and if it doesn't work, at least you tried and wont regret trying. I've heard doggy paddling (swimming) helps to get them to turn as well....so might want to try that before your next apt!

idk exactly what you mean by a 'version' (or is it aversion, or have i just really never heard of it?) but just from reading this, i would go with c-section...

true, i would prefer giving birth vaginally... but just from reading this, if the statistics from this are really that low (58%??) i would not risk it with my baby... also, my mom had 3 c-sections and one vaginally, and the vaginal experience for her was horrible, she had a lot of bleeding and almost died, as well as my bro. she said the c-sections were great.

so even if you have to turn to a c-section, it still shouldn't be that bad an experience for you...

I would try the version since. Especially since you really want a vaginal delivery. If the baby flips back breech nothing was really lost and you know you tried everythig!!

I cant decide for you. I wish you the best. Im due Aug 31st. But Im going in Aug 28th at 7 in the morn for my c section. I wish you the best. Hopefully the baby will turn on its own. Just to let you know c sections arent that bad either , I dont care what no one tells you. Their all different. Good luck.

there are a lot more risks with a csection and dr's are too quick to suggest them theses days- the recovery IS much worse and coming from a csection mom AND nurse I would at least TRY the aversion.

I would just go with the section cause so many things can go wrong i didnt even bother letting them try to turn my son he was breech so we had a c section come to think of it they didnt even ask if i wanted to try.

DONT DO IT...... LOL... sorry but my daughter was breech #1 and they tried to flip her..OMG way worse pain than after the c-section    ... and if it hurt me that much what must have she been going through... I asked them to stop after about 5 minutes because I was in tears... I just had my 3rd c-section 4 weeks ago and by day 2 was up cleaning and walking around.,.. yes day 1 I was a mess but thats was because of the morphine YUKKO.... so my advice would be c-section also you get to meet bubs a little earlier    .... Molly was due the 17th and they did her c-section on August 12th... so 5 days early... also you could just make sure he doesnt turn himself just before the c-section... they did and ultrasound right before my surgery to make sure Molly was still breech (idiots LOL like I wouldnt notice her flipping herself back   )... but with all your extra fluid he just might do it himself... also are they worried about the excess fluid... I knwo a girl who had her baby last month 3-4 weeks early because of the fluid... so they might want to do your c-section real soon   ;... goodlcuk and let us know what you decide
