Very concerned vaccine question (not your average debate..)

posted 23rd Jul
oh no... not another vaccine post!

i'm not intending to start any debates (though i realize they may start). Joshua has his 2 month appt on monday, and i don't know what to do about vaccines. worrying about autism is not my concern, my concern is that i myself had a reaction to my shots. (i had grand mal seizures for two years after vaccinations) http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/grand-mal-seizure/DS00222 i was wondering if anyone on here has personally had reactions to vaccines, and what measures they took for their children, or if you are well researched on the subject of vaccines if you have any input.

either way i want to keep my baby safe, whether it means delaying, etc... i'm just so clueless, and i want to make an informed decision

What vaccine did you have a reaction to? Do you remember? If it was the DPT that particular vaccine has undergone dramatic changes in the formulation of the vaccine but others are still pretty much the same.

I'd say talk to your Pedi and express your concerns.

Ask if your reaction could have been passed down to your son. I personally think it would be safe, but that's just what I think and I honesly KNOW NOTHING about whether or not it can be passed down genetically.

I had horrible reactions to the dtap as a child, so I'm worried about it as well. We're doing a delayed schedule to make it easier to identify a reaction to a certain vaccine and keep him from getting a lot of shots at once.

if your really scared i would say wait. but i must warn you that your doctor will probably try to talk you out of it. i was extremely scared of the mmr vaccine to be given to my son because of his fathers side of the family have SO many medical problems and such. i tried to voice my concerns to my doctor and he basically said he HAD to have it(they wouldnt let him in school, ect.) so he went ahead and gave it to him. thank god nothing happened but then i found out my doctor lied to me after not even listening to my concerns. make your own decision there isnt that high of a chance you baby is going to catch anything serious in my opinion.

I would definitely talk to your ped. about it and let him or her know what happened to you. I wish I had some stats or links or something about the likelihood of hereditary reactions but I don't. This is certainly not a typical vaccine question or situation and I would definitely want the input of a doc or two before doing anything.

Hi! I've also been wondering what to do about giving my child vaccines, although i havent gotten the baby yet=] My sisters child started showing signs of autism after getting his MMR's, and i'm understandably worried about what to do about my little boys. So i got this book- "What Your Dr. May Not Tell You About Childrens Vaccines" http://www.amazon.com/What-Doctor-About-Childrens-Vaccinations/dp/0446677078Its great, but it basically says you need to spread out the vaccines- too much at one timecan actually be harmful. Also, only get him vaccinated for whats really NECISSARY. If he hasnt already had the Hep B Vaccine, you should get tested for it if your breastfeeding- and if you dont have it, or arent breastfeeding, its not necissary. I dont think your little cutie is going to be having unprotected sex or using IV drugs. Also a now common unessicary one is the Chicken Pox, let them get it! Then they'll have natural immunity, without getting all the bad stuff that comes along with the Vaccine- it wont hurt them! Vaccinces have all kinda of possible adverse effects- autism is just one of many and i'm glad to see more people starting to care about what they're putting into their children- i just witsh the government cared a bit more.

I know that my brother and I had a reaction to the vaccine for whooping cough and decided not to give it to my first child but I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my almost 2 month old. I need to do resreach and I've heard that it's not the same as it was when I was getting shots.

edit: if any one has info on the changes that have been made to DTap I would like to know or maybe where I can read up on the changes.

them getting chicken pox does not make them immune..they can actually get shingles later in life or they can get it again...and now they are saying it is not the vaccine that causes autism, they have linked it to a gene.

Quoting Moleissa:“ MMR”

You can deplay the MMR till 2 or 3 yrs old to be on the safe side that way its his body can handle it easier. Since you did have a reaction to it as a child I would suggest delaying that shot till later on. Not all kids can handle the vaccines at such a young age although the MMR has also changed over the years.

Yeah- like i said, "What your Dr May Not Tell You About Childrens Vaccines" Is great- It has information on the Dtap- as well as all the other vaccines and the changes that have been made to them over the years. The vaccines are seperated out in small chapters, so its pretty easy to read. You can get it at any Barnes and Noble- or online.

You can get chicken pox more then once and not everyone gets a immunity. Chicken pox is also deadly in infants and adults. I know someone who was hospitalized three times as a child for chicken pox.

Getting the chickenpox and having natural immunity and getting the vaccine both arent a guarantee that you wont get the shingles. The vaccines provides just as much protection. Shingles occurs when the virus that causeschickenpox starts up again in your body. After you get better from chickenpox, the virus ”sleeps” (is dormant) in your nerve roots. In some people, it stays dormant forever. In others, the virus “wakes up” when disease, stress, or aging weakens the immune system.
