re: Very concerned vaccine question (not your average debate..)

to those who are conserned about autism- this is what i found:

To put to rest concerns that MMR vaccination might cause autism (in a small percentage of children), the New England Journal of Medicine, in 2002, published a population-based study from Denmark, where its authors concluded, "This study provides strong evidence against the hypothesis that MMR vaccination causes autism." The NEJM did not disclose that the "Statens Serum Institut," where three of the authors work, is a for-profit vaccine manufacturer, Denmark’s largest, or that four other authors have financial ties to this company. Only one of the eight authors is not associated with this institute, and the CDC employs him. The study compares the prevalence of autism in 440,000 MMR vaccinated and 97,000 unvaccinated children in Denmark born in the 1990s. A statistical slight-of-hand in age adjustment makes the study show no causal effect; but when unmasked and reformatted, the data actually shows a statistically significant association between MMR vaccine and autism (as Carol Stott and her coauthors make clear in "MMR and Autism in Perspective: the Denmark Story," in the Fall 2004 Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, posted online).

If your doctor does not discuss your concerns with you and lay out a plan, you should probably find a new one. In my health care system, I can email my doctor and he will email me back. If this is an option for you, I would recommend emailing your child's doctor, telling them your experience and concerns, and ask for his advice. That way your plan is mapped out before you go to the doctor and you aren't pressued into doing something you aren't completely comfortable with.

I am glad you posted this Melissa....Penelope has her 2 month appt on Monday as well. I am so concerned about giving her vaccines. I am scared to death. I was under the impression that it was the MMR vaccine linked to autism and that you can get that one delayed. I never heard anyone delaying any other vaccines.......so I am kinda wanting to find out which ones to delay....which ones are fine to get? I am so confused and now I am afraid I won't be able to have enough info to argue with her pedi if I need to.....like if he is pressuring me. I feel like I need to have valids reasons not to.

I don't plan on her ever going to daycare because my Mom would watch her and then we take turns with our work schedules so she is always with us or my Mom. So she shouldn't really be around other kids.

Remember, doctors are people too. They just have a couple of letters after their name!

I feel you......I am leaning towards going ahead and getting the first shots and stuff and then holding off on the MMR one later, unless there is a real reason not to. Like I said before I think I heard the link with autism was with that vaccine? If I am wrong please help??? LOL I feel like a retard!

The 5-6 vaccines they get at 2 months is more of an overload to their immune system. Specifically associated with the brain effecting the synapses.

Do you think the shots at 2 month are safe? Did you get it for your baby? or are you?

The original study years ago that showed a link between autism and vaccinations came out of England and the results have never been reproduced. Also autism is an umbrella term for a few developmental disorders that covers:
1. Infantile autism - the hand flapping, not very verbal, wont make eye contact/show affection, engages in stereotyped activity etc. What most people think of when they think of autism.
2. Rett's syndrome - affects only girls, they are normal until approx 6 mos of age (age of onset is variable) when they begin to regress developmentally
3. Asperger's - the strange kid in school, highly intelligent but with very poor social skills. Can be difficult to parent as they will not pick up on social skills as other children do and will often be ostracised due to this.
4. PDD (pervasive developmental disorder) - same social skills problems as Aspergers, but also with mild mental retardation (ie IQ <70).
Of those 4 disorders only Asperger's and PDD have increased in numbers with the increase in vaccines. The rates of infantile autism have not changed and indeed as someone else pointed out there is new research which suggests a genetic component.
Other important things to remember - all the diseases for which children are vaccinated today can kill infants and kill infants and children in great numbers in countries where people are not vaccinated; we do not have medications to fight these illnesses, all we can do if a child gets seriously ill is give them fluids and meds to keep their fevers down.
All of that being said if you have concerns you should absolutely discuss them with your doctor and feel comfortable doing so. Here's a tip though, it's generally not best to start the conversation by saying "I read on the internet..."
Good luck to all of you!

I believe they say the current shot recommendation at 2 months only uses like 1% of the child's immune system and is actually easier for them to handle than it was 20 years ago because the ingredients have been refined, despite the fact that more shots are given at a time.

Isabelle is about 2 months and a week and I haven't vaccinated her yet. I am debating whether or not I will do MMR. I am probably going to do DtaP but one at a time. Also the polio vaccine that doesn't have the live-virus. And chickenpox cause that can suck if you don't get it til you're an adult. Oh yeah, and one every six months. This way the immune system will recover. So it will take longer but I think (for me) it will help protect Isabelle. Plus I'm breastfeeding so that helps this whole delayed business.
