Night terrors in toddlers- scary...

posted 23rd Jul

My two year old suffers awful night terrors sometimes if he hasnt had his late morning nap that day...

Sometimes he just isnt tired for his nap during the day so i let him stay up....BIG mistake
as then that night he wakes up in the middle of the night and screams and screams and gets all sweaty and sounds so scared... sometimes he wiggles around the bed shouting "no no no" (god knows what the neighbours think!!!)

And the worst thing is when i pick him up to comfort him, he goes more crazy
it's like he is asleep still and he gets all paniky.....

It usually takes me ages to calm him down and relax him.
I have to stroke his hair till he falls asleep.

I read up on it online and it saiys that overtired kids can suffer from it...
It's just horrible to see him in such a state.....

Has anyone else's kids had this problem? ho did you soothe them back to sleep?

I thought night terrors were like sleep walker...don't try to wake them b/c it makes things worse?

My daughter had it too, I can't remember if it was when she was 2 or 3, it ended up being because of a Disney movie that she loved to watch. I would go in and pat her back and talk softly to her. Picking her up always would freak her out more. Good luck!

my son did for about 2 weeks. And your not supposed to wake them or restrain them.oc said to sit with him and talk to him but dont try and restrain him unless he was hurting himself. And it did happen when he was going threw a stage were he wouldnt take both his naps.We would move him to our bed so he could be with us and that usually helped a lot.

My daughter did too but not that extreme she would cry but she would put her self back to sleep..not that i don't comfort her its that it last for two seconds and its gone but its bad she climbs in my bed and falls to sleep. Now its more like sleep walker..she gets up and stands for like a min then goes back to sleep.. lol its funny.

YES MY OLDEST SON WHO IS NOW 12 SUFFERED FOR YEARS WITH NIGHT TERRORS. ONE NIGHT IT WAS SO BAD HE ALMOST JUMPED OUT OUR WINDOW. IT WAS SO SCARY AND I FELT SO HELPLESS. WHAT I DID IS GET HIM ON A STRICT SLEEP CYCLE AND TO THIS DAY HE IS STILL ON IT . SLEEP IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART AND YOU NEED TO KNOW DONT MAKE ANY LOUD NOISES OR TRY TO WAKE HIM . IF HE GETS OUT OF BED LIGHTLY GUIDE HIM BACK TO HIS BED AND THE HARDEST PART WILL BE YO WANTING TO COMFORT HIM, BUT THE WORST THING TO DO IS TALK. THEIR BRAINS ARE STILL ASLEEP AND IT SO SCARY WHEN THEY DONT EVEN RECOGNIZE YOU , BUT I PROMISE IF YOU KEEP CALM AND VERY VERY MELLOW ,YOU BOTH WILL GET THROU, SORRY FOR THE CAPS I didnt realize i was on caps

We've been going through this with our 2, almost 3, year old. When he wakes up crying, I just go into his room, sit on the floor beside his bed, and talk to him as I rub his back. I let him know that mommy is there and ask him what's wrong. Sometimes he will answer, and others it doesn't seem he even hears me. Other times, he has sleepwalked. He will walk into our room, stand there for a few minutes and then say he wants back in his bed. We put him back in his bed and he is back asleep in no time. I have found that his happen when he has had a nap; no nap, no night terror. That part sucks for me, because I liked having a break for at least an hour every day! This site helped me understand it better http://www.nightterrors.org/

I had them throughout my whole childhood.

My parents always attempted to wake me up. They tried the "passive-aggressive" approach and I wouldn't snap out of it. So they'd shake me awake, do whatever they had to do to get me out of it.

I know what you mean. My son is 20 months and he's been doing it for the past few months every so often, but I just kinda thought he was unique. Then I read up on them and realized what was goin on. When I read ur 1st post I thought you were talkin about Quinn cause he does the same thing. It sucks cause he freaks out too when you pick him up and rolls around his crib screaming and theres really nothing you can do to help him. I read that their actually sleeping during it and when you pick them up it makes it worse. So I just always sit in his room with him and pat his back or play wit i hair, just trying to soothe him. There isnt too much else that you can do. It's such a horrible feeling watching them freak like that and there's nothing you can do and you feel so helpless   I hate it!
