posted 22nd Jul
Someone hung that poster at a friend'swork and it took a couple complaints from customersfor them tobring it down.

So I was wondering what are you alls opinions on people/customers that need translation.

I don't have a problem with it...even though I know spanish I would hate to visist Mexico and be told that I need to speak Spanish...but I can see where some people might get frustrated when someone who doesn't speak english comes in talking to them...

The U.S. doesn't have an official language...I see nothing wrong with having translators...?

I think people need to at least attempt English, but it can take a long time and it is very difficult so in the meantime a translator is necessary...

well whenever a customer needed translation they usually brought their child in with them and they spoke fluent of both languages... but other than that if they didnt need much they would just come in and point to what they needed and i would point at things back as i spoke to them until i thought i had figured out what they wanted. it didnt bother me too much....

Needing translation or help because of a language barrier is one thing. You can't force a person who doesn't speak English at all or well to all of a sudden be able to. Kind of along the same lines as telling a deaf person you don't sign so they're just going to have to go ahead and learn to hear. I do think there are better and more tactful ways around a language barrier (especially if it's in a service industry) than to put up a sign like that. However, I would expect someone who CAN speak English to do so if they want my help.

I think that if you are going to live in this country you should learn the language of this country, instead of us having to learn yours!!! Same with if you live in a different country, you should learn their language and not expect them to learn yours.

Nope. The U.S. doesn't and never has had an official language. The majority of people speak English, the next most common spoken language being Spanish.

Anyone who wants to become an American citizen should speak English because that really is our primary language. I wouldnt go to another country and not learn the language there. I dont care if they want to keep their native tongue, but English should be priority. If they are here visiting, thats one thing but if you are going to live here, learn the language.

The United States does not have an official language, but English is spoken by about 82% of the population as a native language, with a majority of English speakers being monolingual. The variety of English spoken in the United States is known as American English; together with Canadian English it makes up the group of dialects known as North American English. 96% of the population of the U.S. speaks English "well" or "very well".[2] There have been several proposals to make English the national language in amendments to immigration reform bills.[3][4] None of these bills have become law with the amendment intact.

My opinion is that even though we do not have an official language, since the majority of the country speaks english if you're going to come here you should speak english as well.
