Bottles, sippy cups...my one year old and a baby on the way.

posted 20th Jul
My one year old hates sippy cups. He will chew on the mouth piece and then throw it down. He absolutely loves his bottle. But I am having another baby in Feb. (my son will be 19 months by then) and I think the sooner he is off the bottle the better, before the new baby comes........

So I was just wondering what kind of techniques you have used to get your toddlers off the bottle....???

Well, with Jonathan it was easy. On his 1st birthday we took away bottles compleatly. There was no weining (SP) involved. He LOVED his sippy cups, so there was no arguing from him at all. I honestly don't know how I would have handled it if he had of not liked his cups. Maybe just gave him a bottlebefore bedfor a while or something. Good Luck!!

I would go shopping for sippy cups with him, let him help you pick them out, and let him help you fill them up.
I would also let him help you pack the bottlesup and say goodbye to them.

If you involve him in the process, he might be more cooperative.

I just took gabes bottles away 2 days ago. I went and got the sippy cups with the soft tip from Nuby. I gave it to him with a little bit of juice in it and he liked it and then when it was time for his feeding i put formula in the sippy cup and he took it just like he did the bottle didnt fight me or anything. Which sippy cups do you use?

Try different kinds of sippys. Will will only take the straw kind with the rubber type straw. Then once he gets used to them, toss the bottles away. That's what we did that worked anyways.

I use the Nuby ones. Another hard part about all of this is that my mom thinks he should have his bottle as long as he wants to have it and thinks it stupid that I want to take it away. And since she watches him while I am at work and at school...theres kind of nothing I can do about it (she will do what she wants while I'm not home no matter what I say)

I think I will just take all of the bottles away, she'll have to deal if I do that, lol, and so will he.

Look up pictures of tooth decay and show them to your mom. That's what happens when children are on the bottle too long.

My daughter will be one on the 26 and I think I'm pregnant again. I also want my daughter to start drinking from the sippy cup and she does the same thing your kid does...

I plan on taking her shopping so she can help me pick out her very own cup. Try finding one with a lid that your toddler likes... They have several different kinds! Also let him pick out his own color!

Best of luck!!

We did not have a problem switching our son from a bottle to a sippy. We were using the Avent bottles and the tops just switch quick & simple. The next child we will do the same thing and explain that it is time to drink from the sippy cup. Now, he drinks primarily from a juice cup or a small tumbler. Still gets a sippy cup when we are in the car and he is thirsty (less mess). At home, it is all cups, all the time.
Now, I had to get rid of the Avent bottles ( BPA issues ) and I got Playtex Nursers with Drop Ins (no BPA issues) and Born Free glass bottles for the new baby. Hope it goes as easily the second time around too.

i breastfed my daughter, so she didn't really have a bottle that much but when we did switch to cuppies, we started with those soft nubby cups. she didn't like those too well though. we got the hard plastic ones that have cartoon characters & stuff like that on them. that's all we did..sorry that probably wasn't much help at all. =/

I gave my baby girl a sippy cup with a hard top at first and all she did was bite on it and throw it on the ground...then i went back and got one of the Nuby ones with a soft top and she loves it so i bought a whole bunch of them...i can just tell you to just try out several different kinds until you find the right one. good luck.
