No, it's for the contractions.. and to prevent seizures, like in my situation. You get a shot in your hip of steroids for the baby's lungs..

As far as I knew, you have to have the baby if your water broke, there's a high risk of infection if they don't.

Am I wrong?

They are probably trying to hold it off until they get the steroids for the lungs then let nature progress on it's own. so within 24 hours

Usually you have to deliver within 24 hours, but if you're in the hospital being watched they will try and make it 48 hours so the steriod shots have enough time to make a full effect.
