10 year old left at home? *update*

posted 19th Jul
So my 11 year old neice made a friend that lives in the apartments i live in and she just told me that her friend is 10 years old and every day of the week day she is left alone until 10 pm at night and on some nights her mom doesn't even come home because she spends the night at her boyfriends. This REALLY makes me so angry i want to cry. I feel like i can't let this mother get away with something so horrible. a 10 year old should not be left alone for so long or without someone to protect her at night. I'm thinking about asking the little girl for her mothers number so i can confront her...or maybe calling the cops on her....what do you guys think?

yeah that is crazy. I could see her leaving the ten year old for an hour or something to go to the grocery store but for that long and Over night?! Isn't that against the law?

I think you should call DSS....that way it will be anonymous (sp)and it would be throroughly investigated

If you confront her, that may cause problems for you that, frankly, at this point, you really do not need.
I would call CPS on her. You can always call them amd remain anonymous.
I agree. A 10 year old has no business being at home all night alone or being left alone for as long as this child is being left alone for.

i think that may qualify as child neglect.

My son is going to be 10 and there is no way he is ready to stay home alone for a little while much less overnight. That mom needs to get her stuff straight. Daughter or boyfriend? Um daughter!! Poor little girl.

ETA: I agree with calling child services.

You have to catch her in the act, if you confront the mom she won't do anything. So I agree with what everyone is saying, call the authorities

CPS take longer to act if its just a tip off. it is usually a lot faster to get the police directly involved.

I would call CPS when you know the mom isn't there... Isn't there a law that says how old you have to be to be left home alone ALL NIGHT? There has to be something... poor kid.

As much as I hate contacting authorities, in this case I think it's warranted. It's highly irresponsible to habitually leave a child that young alone.

I would talk to the mom to be see what's going on. Then if she confirmed this I'd ask if she needed a sitter or something. She may not have the funds for day care, but that doesn't explain the overnights. So depending on her answers I probably would call child protective services when I knew for sure she had left her alone along with calling the police. I don't know what the law in your state is about leaving kids home alone.
