All mommas on WIC

posted 19th Jul
So, I really think I'm going to go apply for WIC on monday. Ive been unemployed since April and money is just getting way toooo tight for comfort.

So- to all my BG momma's on wic- how much do you recieve each month/week? And is it worth going on?

yea. You get a pretty good amount of stuff. We only have two ppl in our house and we end of giving some of it away every month.

I dont know anything about the program honestly. How does it work? Is it like foodstamps where you get a card that you use like a debit card? or do you get a check? Or do they just give you the food from their office?

I'm not sure where you are in New York but this might help a little bit

Some states are changing their "rules" I've heard here they are only going to provide formula for the first 6 mo...... Anyway, I breastfeed.. When we lived in FL and were on a tight income we got WIC, and they even gave us extra stuff for breastfeeding. It was really helpful.

You should apply for WIC. Even if you have an income you may still qualify. I know they give you milk, cheese, eggs, beans or peanut butter, juice and cereal. It helps a lot when you are unemployed or on a fixed income. When baby arrives you will still get it for like 6 months I think and the formula for baby. Now if you decide to breastfeed I think you can get tuna and carrots as well. I didn't sign up this time as my 3 year old receives WIC and 8 gallons a month would be entirely too much. Also all states vary with WIC.

It varies state to state.. In FL we got checks and you go to the store and pick out what you want.. In VT they apparently deliver it right to your door and you can only change your options every so many months when you have an appointment (this is what I am told).. Idk about NY

WIC is a big help. Every little bit helps. Especially with food prices these days. You get milk, cheese, eggs, juice, cereal (unsweetened), beans/peanut butter. It's a small help but you get 4 vouchers for every month.

It's not like foodstamps. Here where I live we receive checks normally 3 months worth at a time. On each check/voucher it lists what you can get and the quantity. They also gave us a card that has pictures of what you can get. One more thing we have to do classes on nutrition for check pick-up after three months I think.
