spicy food!

posted 19th Jul
Ever since i got pregnant i find myself addicted to heavily spiced food - thai food, indian curry, korean kimchi or anything with hot sauce drizzled over librally... and when i cook for myself i always add hand full of garlic, chilli pepper, ginger... without them i have no appetite, and will "gag" when i eat bland food.
i've been reading posts about how preggos can drink orange juice or sugary stuff to get an inactive baby to move. it got me thinking.... does it mean that my baby is now swimming in spicy amniotic fluid   ???
the thought of spicy amniotic fluid doesn't sound very pleasant at all. are there other mothers like me who like to spice up their food and concerned?

Someone asked Stacy Quarty, author of Frankly Pregnant, that same question. Her response (word for word from her website) is this:

Q. I am six weeks pregnant and have been eating spicy food throughout. Is this harmful to the baby's development?

A. If you enjoy spicy foods, go ahead and eat them while you still can. The baby will be fine. Later in pregnancy, most women have real problems with heartburn, diarrhea, gas and bloating that can be aggravated by eating spicy foods. I can remember actually having dreams about eating spicy Indian food during my second pregnancy. I craved it so badly, but couldn't have a bite without experiencing extremely painful gas and diarrhea which would, in turn, flare up my hemorrhoids.

If you plan on breastfeeding after pregnancy, you should abstain from eating gas-causing and spicy foods then. The flavors and gasses from foods can be passed on through the breast milk and newborns have extremely sensitive digestive systems.

You shouldn't be too concerned. I'm a spciy food addict myself. Always have been always will be. I think the OJ and etc is more for the sugar, it gives them a sugar rush and jump starts them to moving. Plus the cold. Cold will do it too. But unless your doc is concerned about you eating spicy for something like ulcers or severe reflux etc I wouldn't be too concerned. Just enjoy it while you can!

I don't have an answer for you, but I am kind of in the same boat as you. I just read that in a couple of weeks the baby will taste whatever it is I eat because it will be drinking the amniotic fluid ... and I am absolutely addicted to tomatoes, salt, pepper, and vinegar (plain white distilled vinegar). And I can't help but think that I'll have to stop eating that in a couple weeks because it just doesn't sound very appealing.

It really doesn't hurt the baby in ANY way. Eat what you want to eat, and don't stress.

Thank you Larenna's Momma for looking up the article and putting my mind at ease. Right now i don't suffer from heartburn, unless i'm over hungry. i do intend to breast feed when my little one arrives, so i guess i'll have to try and wean myself from spicy food eventually.
