When and how did you start potty training

posted 18th Jul
My sons going to be two in september (he is a 32 week preemie though) He has been showing signs of potty training for 3 months now. When I bought my other son home from the hospital my older boy wanted to go potty on the potty and I let him but it was so hard with a newborn and me a stay at home mom from day one by myself that I didnt want to deal with it so I put it off. Well he now shows little interest but he still tells me everytime he ha to poop or pee he don't like his diapers being dirty and he wakes up alot of nights dry already. So do I start to let him go potty now or should I hold off tell my youngest (3 months) gets alittle bigger. We did just move him into a twin bed on the 2nd of July so he did just have one major change. Also how did you guys potty train. Where did you put your potty some people I know put them in the living room some in the bathroom. Thanks you guys

If he's showing interest and knows what your sposed to do in the potty and doesnt like to be dirty or wet and is staying dry during the night alot... GO FOR IT! You dont want to miss the window, that is the hardest thing when you wait too long.. then they really fight it when you want them to train.
When they're ready, it usually takes less than a week to get them totally trained!
I'd say take the chance while you have it, cause my SIL made that mistake and now she's still fighting to get her son totally trained and he's 3.5 years old!

If he is showing signs he is ready, then what are you waiting for? Start right away and put him in underwear. The longer you put it off while he is showing signs of wanting to do it, the longer it can take to actually train him. You could actually miss your window of opportunity by continuing to put it off. My son was 2 1/2 when my youngest was born, and I am also a SAHM, but when he woke up one morning and wanted to go in the potty, we started right then and there (my youngest was 4 wks old at the time). It can be done, and while it may be a lot of work in the beginning, it pays off big time in the long run.

I introduced the potty around 16 months. Just for her to sit on it and get familiar. Then around 2 we actually started talking about it and trying to get her to use it. She would go a whole day of doing well and then demand her diaper the next day. Stubborn kid. At 2.5 I said no more and told her diapers were no longer an option. Haven't had a problem since. I don't did this because I ABSOLUTELY KNEW she could do it. Never force your child to do something they aren't comfortable with. Oh and ditch the diapers/pull ups during the day. Do either bare butt or undies. It makes the learning process go much faster...even if it's a little messier. Good luck! My kids are preemies too =)

i wouldn't wait. If you wait it will be much harder later.

I would put the potty in the bathroom.. never heard of it in the living room and to me it would be weird in there...

Just buy him some thick underware, and start taking him often.. Don't punish for accidents and reward for going in the potty!

Oh I forgot the rest.
I started training my daughter at 14 months, she was day trained by 18 months and night trained the week she turned two.
I started in her little potty, then got her a little kid seat for the big potty, I put the little potty by the toilet and I'd sit her on it while I went on the big one, that way we went "together" every morning and it just became our routine.
I started off cheering for her when she's go and rewarding her with and M&M, especially when she'd poop in it. I could always tell when she was getting ready to poop and I'd sit her down and read books to her and she'd go on the potty. Even if I didnt catch it right away and she started to go in her diaper I'd still put her on and let her finish in the potty so she could get the hang of it. It took a while before she'd actually come and TELL me when she needed to go, for a while I had to remember to take her every two hours or so, cause she always remembered to tell me AS she was going...( MOOOOM!!! I PEEED!!!!!! as it ran down her leg. lol ) But just before she turned two she started telling me before hand. When I weaned her off her bottle of milk at night she really started staying dry all night and I'd just take her and sit her on the potty first thing when she woke up in the morning, before she had a chance to pee her pants, she only has had three accidents in the night since then.
It really wasnt that hard, I didnt pressure her or make a time limit for her to be trained by... we just kept working at it and since she was ready and willing it was a pretty natural process! Good luck!

I missed the thing about the living room...don't put it in the living room! And my son was 5 months old when I potty trained my daughter. I really don't see why another child would make a difference.

My friend used to keep a travel potty in her car, and her son never used a public restroom until he was old enough to pee standing up, and not touch anything!

I carry the travel size of Lysol in my diaper bag and one in my purse. I use it for myself to use a public restroom, so you better believe I use it for my son!

Yeah I was told also they have little fold up pottys that you can put together for them to use? I don't know where you would get it from though. I thought the potty in the living room was alittle weird myself but a friend said it was easier to do that way I would just think it would confuse the kid! I mean oh I go potty in the living room mommy and daddy go in the bathroom. So yeah thanks again for all the tips
