. when did you start giving your baby water? .

I'm wondering if maybe I should start giving a little bit to my 4 month old?

It's sooo hot now, I can't see how she can go without it, even if it is in the forumla.

She's fine. The formula is enough liquid for a 4 month old. I didn't start offering water until around 10 months.

You can start giving them water when they are newborns. It doesn't matter. Water is good and it doesn't hurt them. I sometimes do it between feedings.

My daughter is 18 mos and will only drink flavored water, but I didn't start giving it to her until she was about 13 or 14 mos. Before that it was always milk or half juice half water.

Oh, okay. I just figured that since it's hot & we go to the beach often, that she could use the extra hydration...but she's been fine without it so i guess there's no need? Thanks for the replies!

I don't remember exactly what was dangerous about it to be honest...both me, my sister, & my fiance had water when we were babies & we came out fine!

My daughter's pediatrician told me a couple of months ago that she didn't need it because she had enough water from her formula...but he also said we would discuss giving it to her around 4 months, we just never got around to it at her appointment

It is absolutely fine to give water to your baby, even when he's a newborn! We mix the formula with water, it's not bad! It's also good to use when your baby is always hungry or gets hungry like an hour or two after a feeding.

My ped said no water tell the baby is atleast a 10 months. Babies hold water and that can be bad for them. The formula is more then enough water and there is no need for plain water. When you give a baby water mixed with things it is different then just plain water. I would talk to your doctor before anything. My sons 3 months old and the nurse I talked to today said 32-36 ounces of formula is more then enough in a 24 hour period for a child of 3-4 months of age. Hes on cereal already because of reflex but thats in his bottles. They even recomend that you mix Cereal with formula not water when they are this age. I don't know why. Talk with your doctor everyone says something different

everywhere I've heard not to give them water until they are at least six months.. I can't remember the exact reasoning ( I even printed it out and gave it to Tyla's dad) something to do with their liver not being able to handle it.. and also it fills them up when they should be having formula which is obviously more nutricious.

If your baby gets hungry an hour or two after a feeding, you should not fill his/her belly with water, baby wants to eat!  I have never heard of not feeding a baby when they get hungry, and giving water to stave off their appetite.

FYI: the danger of giving a baby water is water intoxication.  A sip of water isn't going to do that, but a bottle of water?  You can just offer formula or breast milk more often if you are afraid that baby is going to be dehydrated in the heat.
