how do you deal?

posted 18th Jul
how do you deal with family memebrs who make it very well known that they do not like the name you're thinking about?

i know it shouldnt matter, but i have been letting it get to me.

does anyone else have this problem? and how are you dealing with it?

keep the names private until after the birth.. then they can say all they want but it wont change anything...

It's none of their business. Someone somewhere is not going to like your baby's name..so just go with what you want.

That's why we're keeping the names to ourself this time around.  My sister still talks crap about my daughters name, Hailey Jo. She hates it. I couldn't care less about what she thinks though. I know it's easier said then done, but try not to let it get to you. Try not to bring it up anymore. If it comes up just smile and say, "well we love that name" and change the subject. It's no one's business.

My mom hates that I'm naming my daughter Rhyan, but only because my oldest daughter is named Rhilee.... I just tell her that if she had her own baby she could name it whatever she wanted, but this is my baby and I will name her what I want... and then I ignore her...

I either
A) Don't tell them the name we have picked so I don't have to listen to them complain about it
or
B) Say something like "Well, I guess it's a good thing that I can name my children what I want and you can name yours what you want."

My husband's grandma got all defensive because she didn't like what we named our daughter but we just told her it was our daughter and we would name her what we want! If you want to be nice about it just say you will take their opinion into consideration.

yeah, we actually had only told our parents and then my dad went and told my grandmother who told everyone else... and so on.

my grandmother doesnt like the name, its so very annoying cause its all she'll talk about when i am around. she tries to suggest differnt names.
we had told our parents not to tell anyone to try to avoid all of this but my dad got excited and blabbed.
thanks ladies, i need the confidence boost!

we wanted to name our son Grayson. My MIL suggested Jason because it sounded similar and was "normal" We settled on Elliot w/the NN of Eli and then she wanted us to name him Elijah because it "made more sense w/the nn Eli" I was right pissed for a long time but, honestly my son is no where near a Grayson and 100% an Elliot.
IF you are set on the name. ignore your grandmother.
No one said one thing about our daughters name except myMIL thought my husband said "we're naming the baby Hyper if it's a girl" LOL I guess I have a rep in the family of liking "weird" names. I had my heart set on Madelyn....no sure how that is weird but, OK
Tell granny that when the baby gets here she won't care what you've named it, she'll love it just the same.

I've decided the next time I get a rude comment from someone saying I don't like that name, I'm gonna be like yeah my baby doesn't like your name either.

People will always have their opinon. I would name it whatever I felt I wanted to. Although please don't give them anything off the wall. My first name is Aries and I hate it with a passion. I know it's hard because you want so badly for everyone to ooooh and ahhhh over what you want to name your child but just remember everyone thinks differently and you'll have to be a million different ways to please everyone so do what makes you happy!!! Good luck!!!

Wow that is so ME! I had to change my baby's name 3 times during my pregnancy because I would let people's comments and opinions get to me...I shoulda been smarter than that...O well when we settled on the 3 name, we kept it secret! I can't believe how rude some people can be though...I can't wait to hear what they'll name their children so I can say ewwww, what were you thinking?

we were planning on the name finn, for our daughter.
we hadnt decided if we would name her
1. finn
2. finley
or 3. finian
i am not crazy about finley, my husband is not crazy about finian (he says its too irish sounding) and now i'm feeling that just finn is going to j get "isnt that a boys name?...." or finn, like a fish?"  those are two we keep hearing.
we are throwing around different names now but if feels very stressful.
i want to wait and meet her before we decide but lately, with not much time to go, names are all i can think about.
i really appreciate you all writing back, its making me feel better about it all!
