re: Is this 1950 or 2008?

Quoting Nyakos:“ I never really understood why people were so mortified to have their kids mistaken for the opposite gender. ... [snip!] ... have the cutest little pink bodysuit with lavender kittens on it for my son, his father is the one that picked it out for him.”

Cute!

haha in the hospital, One of the nurses kept asking what sex he was because he looked like both, and apparently, the pastel yellow, green, orange and blue stars on white onsie threw her off because it was girly.

Quoting God:“ So, here's something that I'm genuinely baffled by. Why the hell is it 2008 and we're STILL stuck on ... [snip!] ... years and we're still hung up on the color our babies wear? Someone needs to fill me in on why this is so damned important. C.”

It's Western society's concept of masculinity and femininity that are at stake should we cross color boundaries. Men are supposed to be strong and that's what blue symbolizes. Pink is soft, quiet, and pretty which embodies the epitome of feminitity.

While I haven't put Darwin in a pink outfit, I have used pink blankets and his bedroom is painted purple. I draw the line at lace and bows though...

I've pretty much towed the gender line with Caden--but I DO wonder something. Everyone is always telling me that he LOOKS like a boy--that you could NEVER mistake him as a girl (the reason most commonly cited for this are the lines on his forehead which he gets from **cough** mommy!). I wonder--if I stuck him in a pink frilly dress, would people say the same thing?

Quoting Carla Ann:“ I just don't think that rests on the kid. Somewhere along the line, something has told them that they are a girl/boy and it would be COMPLETELY unacceptable to be called anything else.”

gender constantcy (realizing your label of boy or girl doesn't change) happens at age 3. Then kids spend their time trying to fulfill the definition of their gender, which is defined by society

haha probably because little girls in pink frilly dresses get mistaken for little boys.

Quoting Kristine D.:“ I hate that if you want something with dogs or puppies 99.9% of them will come in blue... Only poodles come in pink.”

I hate that kitties are only pink...unless you want strong, aggressive, manly tigers, lions, etc

I personally don't think it is important at all what color your kids wear. When I found out the sex of my daughter, they told me she was a boy. So of course my first instinct was to go out there and but all "boy colors".

When my daughter was born a girl, I was very shocked. But there was no way in hell that I was going to go and return all of the "boy colored" clothing that I had bought or that was given to me. She wore the little onsies until she grew out of them.

Or course I had to return some of the stuff that had sayings on them such as, "mommy's little boy". But that was about it.

People did sometimes mistake my daughter as a little boy when she was a newborn. It never really affected me.

I look back now and see that it was foolish of me to buy "boy colors" when I found out that I was having a "boy". It shouldn't really matter what color your baby has on. A girl is still a girl, a boy is still a boy.

Therefore I agree with what you are saying.

I could care less if people mistake Jamil for a girl. I usually find it odd when they do, but I'm deffinatly not offended. He dosen't have any pink though... I would deff put my girl in blue.. (Being that I have all kinds of it from Jamil)

That's sad...

Cute! LOL

I didn't get a picture of my son in his purple and white owl sleeper. he only got to wear it once before it was stolen in the bag of laundry that someone stole from us in a communal laundry room.

Realizing I didn't exactly address the issue:

Color discrimination is pretty silly, but I keep Caden in boy colors for two simple reasons:

1) His Daddy prefers he look like a boy--I'm not a single parent, and we DO make decisions together.

2) Stupid or not, society, at this point, still differentiates by color--and I'd rather not eventually scar my kid by crossdressing him (by society's standards). I'm all for social change in the whole gender divisiveness category, but I'm unwilling to use my son as a social experiment.

Its like how dad's dont want their son to be gay, so they dont give them a sexy, boobalicious barbie doll. Instead they give him a big muscular guy with flowing blonde hair and a big sword.

sheesh.
