Question about breastfeeding diet?

posted 18th Jul
Ok so I am brand new at breastfeeding and thought I was doing an ok job until today. My son (who is one week and a day today) has refused my breast all day! Its like he thinks my milk tastes bad or something. His gas has been bad today as well, but he takes the formula without complaint.

How long after I eat something would it "show up" in my milk? I had some carrots night before last and yesterday I drank a ton of apple juice....I'm not sure if that's whats causing his aversion today..he usually loves to nurse???

Any suggestions?

chances are he's not refusing the milk, but your breast... nursing is a lot more difficult then drinking form a bottle........ didn't anyone forewarn you about the problems associated with give bottles to a b/fing newborn? Most people reccommend ( including myslef) that you wait until about 6 weeks beofre introducing a bottle just for that reason........
try pumping and giving your milk in the bottle and see what happens.....
if babe takes it, you've got your self a bottle problem not a milk problem.....
If thats the case you can PM me if you want and I'll try to help you get him back on the boob
good luck.

Aw, hun. I think he's having nipple confusion. Like the post above you really should hold off on the bottle til good eating is established with the breast. Plus it will effect your supply if you aren't nursing when your baby is hungry.

Good luck and what amanda said pretty much covered it. Its tons easier for a baby to drink out of a bottle then work it off the breast. If you can just keep offering the breast and not the bottle. I have no other advice maybe contact a lactate consultant. That would be the best plan of action.

So I decided to pump some milk since his last meal had been formula from the bottle. He woke up while I was pumping and wanted to nurse so I let him. Since the hospital he's been getting both and the past two days he only got about 4oz of formula. I do think he's having some nipple confusion, but it's practically impossible for me to only offer breast (as I have two small children at home with me and I have to be in my sister's wedding tomorrow, leaving baby with daddy).

I just want this to be as successful as it can be. I enjoy nursing and I don't want him to reject me.......

Any more advice, or advice on a good bottle for when doing both?

some babies really just don't do well with going back and forth until they're older...You can keep trying of course, but just be really careful about not doing it unless you really need to....
Can you distract your other kids when you need to nurse with a snack, or read them a book while your nursing???
When I did start Neil on a bottle ( I think he was 5 weeks)...... he wouldn't take the regular nipples... I used playtex avance wide ( the ones with the funny little membrane in the bottom to let air in).... but I've heard from lots of moms that the ones form medla that are made for boobie babies are really good.
And you have older kids so I'm sure you know that they WILL eat when they're hungry so w if need be don't feel bad about with holding the bottle when you can nurse.... also offering the boob before baby gets uber hungry ( like screaming crying hungry) can help too, they're a bit more patient when they're not freaking out

Quoting Amanda Neil's mommy:“ some babies really just don't do well with going back and forth until they're older...You can keep trying ... [snip!] ... baby gets uber hungry ( like screaming crying hungry) can help too, they're a bit more patient when they're not freaking out

I am going to try and make sure to offer them early, rather than when he's mad hungry. It just seems that he's sleeping hard. It's been so long since I've had a little one, how much longer before he's staying awake more?

Every babe is different, Neil was staying up for a total of an hour wby the time he was 2 weeks.
You can watch him when he's sleeping when it's getting close to feeding time ( 2-3 hours depending on your babe) and if you see him smacking his lips or opening his mouth or doing the rooting thing in his sleep..go ahead and wake him to feed him... some babes just don't wake up until thier really really hungry
