Refusing to self feed

posted 18th Jul
My son is eleven months old.  (Only three weeks from turning one   ).  The last couple of days he's been giving me a really hard time eating his solids.  I've been giving him some sort of finger food at each meal for a couple of months now, and he's always done really well with them.  Granted if he gets tired of a specific food or gets bored he'll start tossing it over the edge to the dog (any tips on stopping this would be greatly appreciated too).  But the last two days almost everything has been tossed over the edge.  Now, he was sick a couple of days ago.  He was running a fever of 101.  A little Tylenol cleared it right up, and he's seemed fine since, except for this.  To be fair, he's barely eating his solids at all.  If he's not paying attention, I can sneak some bites in, otherwise he tries to knock it off the fork/spoon, whatever. Could it be that he's just still not feeling 100%?  Could it just be a phase?  Or is my child just a monster?  (Just kidding, I know that's true.)  lol  Thanks for any help.

is he teething? Your son is close to my daughters age. And she is having a hard time getting these teeth through. I've noticed her appitite is lacking. It could be the heat too. Even I haven't felt like eating latey its just too hot!

I think it's pretty normal. Will went through a simmilar phase a few months ago and come to find out he was teething, hardcore (5 at once  ). If he's hungry: he'll eat. Don't worry about it. Just be sure he's still getting plenty of fluids and if you're really worried pump some pedialite into him or formula (if he's still on it).

As for the food throwing I can't help you. Will's always thrown food he doesn't like to the dog, and we don't even have a dog.

Be glad you've got a dog to clean up after him! LOL Man I used to use those little plastic mats under the highchair and I swear my kids made it a game to see how much they could get OFF the mat!

take his food away when he starts to throw it. Thats what I do. It's helped alot she realizes she doesnt' get more food if she tosses it on the floor.
Now she is getting sneaky she tucks it into the side of her seat!!!!!!

Is it possible he's teething? It's impossible to get my dd to eat more than a few bites of anything when she's teething. My dd is over a year old so I can give her pediasure when she's not eating...she'll drink it right down and I know she's getting good calories even though she won't eat anything...your little boy is close to a year...maybe you can call and ask his Ped's opinion about pediasure? Fair warning though, my dd will no longer drink plain milk...she prefers her pediasure...-_-

He might be teething.  He already has 7 teeth, and should be getting ready to cut #8, but I've never had problems like this before with him when he's teething.  Usually he's cranky, but he's never had a problem eating.  He was up three times last night, and I think it's because he was hungry because he didn't eat enough at dinner.  We're still bfing, and he doesn't take formula, so I can only give him what I've got.

Before we had a dog, Eli and Anna would say "Dat for da birds!" when they threw food. (All because I let them throw their hot dogs buns on the ground outside ONE time and told them the birds would eat them!) LOL

What we have to do is lock our dog out of the kitchen with a baby gate. He tends to throw the food over the edge more when she is standing there begging at his chair. When she is out of sight, she is out of mind and more food goes in his mouth. lol

I don't force him to eat by any means.  But the last few days, he'll refuse it once, and then if I offer a couple minutes later, he'll eat.  So I keep offering until I'm sure he's not going to take anymore.

It's just a toddler for you. This can be caused by a range of issues...teething included, or he could just not be hungry. My son is 20 months old and goes through this phase almost weekly. He will be ravenous for days...eating anything I put in front of him and then some days (like the past 3) he won't eat anything. He probably hasn't eaten more than a bowl full of food (everything added together) in the past 3 days. Now tomorrow he'll probably start eating well again. They just go through these phases. At this age everything starts being so much more interesting than eating to them.

Unfortunately Vince throws it for her even if she's not there waiting.  lol

That's funny.  lol.  Sounds about typical.  Let 'em do it one time. . .
