Is crying good for baby's lungs?
posted 17th Jul '08
My daughter is 6 weeks old, almost 7, and I pretty much never let her cry for very long. I usually run to pick her up or start feeding her right away. I am against letting a baby cry, but my MIL, Aunt and Cousin in law keep telling me that I'm going to spoil her (Which I know is not true), then today they tell me that I need to let her cry for at least 10 minutes!! I find that appalling, they say it supposedly helps their lungs develop and my cousin in law knows it's true because that's what her doctor told her. She said when my daughter gets pneumonia or something like that she'll get very sick since I never let her cry it out and develop her lungs.
I researched it and I know that crying is actually bad for babies, but I wanted to get your opinions on this. Do you believe the myth that crying is good for baby's lungs?
(I am not going to listen to them, and I will always respond quickly to my daughter's cries. I want to make sure she knows that I am always here for her and will listen and respond to her needs.)

I wouldnt let a baby that small CIO but an older one i will and my dr said its ok for them to cry sometimes esp when little helps open there lungs but really a few seconds of that is enough when they are as small as yours is. I mean my son had a lung problem and didnt come out crying so when he finally did or he cried after we took him home it just reassuered me that his lungs were still working.

you know it seems like the spoiling thing is actually true.. like if you run to pick up a baby as soon as they cry they will always want held.. but i read an article that says they its really good to run to them for the first 3 months of their lives because it's building the trust issue.. after that you should cut down on it and let them cry a little because at about 3 months they start learning that all they have to do is cry to be held even if they are not hungry or anything..
I've heard it is very good for their lungs to cry... but im like you and probably wont let my son cry very long when he gets here!!

i personally dont think that crying is bad for babies since thats how they communicate that they need something, but i dont believe in cio either. but my doctor also told me it was ok to let him cry for short periods of time to help strengthen his lungs but deff not ten min maybe like 2 or 3 min is the longest id let him cry like while i was making his bottle and things like that.

My MIL told me the same thing about crying being good for their lungs, but I don't personally subscribe to that theory at all. I really have never let Kennedy truely CIO, and her lungs are fine, LOL.

I don't want her to make a peep. She's 8 weeks today. I also have heard that thing about lungs too. I guess I believe it, but I refuse to have her crying until she's much older. Possibly after 3 or 4 months of age. I dunno, it depends, I'll see along the way I guess.
My mom keeps telling me to let them cry it out while falling asleep. Hell no I'm not doing that.
I've researched some.. and honestly, they just came out of a womb, this is a new world to them, I truly believe they need to be held and know that they're safe in someones arms attending their needs.
If she's awake and makes noise cuz she's bored, I'll leave her and talk to her from where I am. If she starts crying I'll put her on the bouncer or something. Thats if I know she's fed, burped, and has a dry diaper.

not that young definately not..my baby is the same age...and i'm always getting told to let her cio..or she will be spoiled..i don't believe that at all..babies cry for reasons and if she is hungry, i'm gonna feed her...or whatever the case..and there are a few times where i can't get to her right away and she starts acting like she is gonna throw up after just 2 or 3 minutes so 10, i could never do...that can't be healthy..later yea i will let her cio, like maybe 9 mos or even a year...i think it does build trust when you go to them right away.

If babies needed to CIO to strengthen their lungs then all the babies in my family would have super smurffy lungs. They'd all be like 80 yr old smokers. That's just a super old wivestale. Tell your MIL to shove it up her ass and shut her pie hole.

Crying isn't BAD for babies. That is their only way of communicating when they are so very young. Excessive crying to the point of gagging or throwing up is a different story. It is ok to let a baby cry for a short amount of time. It teaches them to self soothe and learn to become securely attached to the parent that is the primary caregiver. Not allowing your child to cry isnt teaching them anything, I don't feel CIO is for me and my little girl but it works for other mothers which is fine.

hehe! cool!\yeah I also know cio is not right at this age because of how distressed I got when i tried it. within a minute or two she is gagging and almost screaming and I'm breaking in down in tears, I just can't do it!

I have raised 9 (yes, NINE) children and Americans are not only spoiling their kids by not letting them face reality by allowing them to cry, but continue this behavior as the child grows by expanding the 'don't let them cry it out' to 'I don't want a public seen, so I will buy what he wants', then when the kid gets arrested it becomes 'my kid would never do that'. Well, they did because you were afraid to let a kid be a kid, learn reality applies to everyone and then be a PARENT and discipline your kids...after all, YOU are the boss not them. Of my 8 adult kids, 6 are in or prior service, severed 13 rotations in the desert (the war) with no injuries and are now normal, functional adults. Kids cry, get over it.

According the Nutty Professor, screaming is good for the lungs. It 'clears out the mucus.'
