Anyone have IVF or know someone who did?

posted 17th Jul
I know the chances of multiples are higher. But does EVERYONE have multiples with IVF? Any idea on how much it costs, since I'm sure insurance wont pay for it. And was there a reason other than not being able to conceive, like taking out a gene to get rid of a genetic disorder?

okay..this could be a long one..last month i had my first cycle of IVF..we transferred two embryos and the transfer failed, due to my uterus not being of the utmost quality..i have insurance but with everything meds, copays, etc. it cost approximately $2,500...so we froze 6 embryos and we are scheduled for our second cycle of IVF..our frozen/thaw transfer is next friday july 25th..at this point a uterus measuring 8 is considered good..on tuesday, mine thankfully measured a 9.9 so we are praying, that that coupled with assisted zona hatching, this will be a successful transfer..we are planning to transfer 2-3 embryos depending on how many are of good quality..so far this cycle will only cost us about $ 1,100 and that is only because we are electing to do the AZH which is not covered by insurance..it is a lengthy, emotional, rollercoaster, and i have never bonded so much with my husband, as i have with him sticking syringes in my ass cheeks   he says thats his way of getting me knocked..the risk of multiples is higher but not everyone does..i know of two women on BG who have/ or having singletons and one who is expecting twins..either way..science is amazing and even if it isnt in the cards for us this cyle either, we feel incredibly blessed to be apart of something so wonderful..

note- without insurance..the IVF procedure itself, without all the medication, office visits etc, is $9,000 and a frozen/ thaw transfer is $3,300..i hope that any of this is helpful..i won't lie..i love to talk about it and the girls on BG are always so supportive..makes me feel warm and fuzzy..kisses//faith

they do ivf to make sure #7doesnt have the mutation. we thought about it, but i think if we go for #2, we'll take the chance, unless we have the money for ivf by then, I dont personally know anyone that's done it, but i think the chances are higher of having multiples than having a kid w/out cf w/out having IVF, make sense? LOL but who knows, especially if you're fertile, since in most cases, IVF IS done for couples that have trouble conceiving and they are the ones that wind up with multiples.

i wonder if the cost would be different for someone that doesnt have the fertility probs though... it is more so gonna be the cost of weeding out the mutated gene. Tawny, I think because you obviously didnt have a prob getting pregnant, that you wouldnt have to go through all the shots and stuff that others may have to go through.

I honestly think that perhaps if you post this question on the cf forum (not sure if you are a part of that), you may have a better answer for your "situation" since it doesnt seem many ppl here are in "our" boat.

I definately didnt have a problem getting pregnant lol.
But you're willing to take the 25% chance? I know I'm not, that hospital stay just shook me to the core and i wouldnt want to put another child through what Tait has been through. AND I wouldn't want to have 2 kids die at 25. I dont want Tait to, but ifI lost 2 within a couple years of eachother I couldnt handle it.

The thing is, there is always a chance of something being "wrong" with a child- ya know? Whether you do IVF or not. Ya never know, with that, you can have a deaf or blind baby... but as far as the CF goes... we're still not sure how we're gonna go about having another child... when or IF we will, or if we may wind up adopting or something. Also, I think that before our kids are in middle school, there will be a cure for CF... so I am not overly concerned about the short life span at this point. Plus, both Tait and Toby were diagnosed early, so they are being treated and that means they should have a much longer life span than 25 years sweetie. The average at this point... is almost 38 years, and remember, that is because medicine has advanced so much and in the next 10 years, even if there is no cure, that age can go up to maybe 60! Maybe I'm just optimistic... but I think that my optimism about the whole situation has helped our whole family feel better about it. Because if anyone is to be upset about Toby having CF, it would be his mom and dad... and if they aren't freaking about it, then no one else should really be- because I think that I probably understand it more than anyone else in our families. Anyone, sorry such a long post! LOL

I'm glad you're not worried! One of us needs to be sane. I cry everyday thinking about the "what-ifs" and complications Tait could have. You're right though, there are so many medical advancements there could be a cure. I sure hope so, that would be the best thing I could think of.

Well, the docs seem very confident about a cure. I mean, like they seem that they know there is one right around the corner but is in the research process still... so of course I just went and did a little search myself and found this:

I hope that you start feeling a little better soon though cuz you have a great little perfect boy and he will be fine!! (see there i go with my optimism again. lol)

I dont think everyone that has IVF HAS multiples, I think it's just that more often than not people have twins and up because of how many fertilized eggs are inserted.
My hubby and I know a couple that are having IVF done and theyare having it done because they have had troubleTTC. She had to have a D & C done awhile back due to endometriosis.... So weshallsee whathappens for them...

my husband and I are doing IVF, I had endometriosis and my tubes were blocked, so we put in 2 embryos on the 5th of Aug...actually I go tomorrow to see if I'm preggo. We payed for everything out of pocket. $2500 for meds, $9960 for everything else(except for $445 for trial transfer and $185 for semen analysis) so it's expensive...but it's all worth it in the end.
I think the chance of multiples increases, but it really depends on how many embryos you put in. We are freezing the rest, in case it fails, or we want to try again. Luckily once you have frozen embryos the cost is dramatically decreased to implant again.
Good luck with everything, hope my info helped in someway.
