caffeine and breastfeeding

posted 17th Jul
I dont drink a ton of caffeine so I never really thought to stop and think about this. Im wondering though, if while breast feeding you're suppose to stick to the same caffeine limitations as when you're pregnant? I would assume you are but I just want to check. The caffeine wouldnt have the same impact on an infant as it would on a growing fetus would it?I mean an infant is much more formed than a fetus (obviously) so is caffeine still as big of a deal? Ive just discovered (and LOVE!) starbucks americanos, however, I just found out that a grande has 220mg of caffeine in it, Im worried that drinking them and breast feeding could harm my daughter.

Does the caffeine I eat or drink get into my breast milk? Could it harm my baby?

Caffeine does enter your bloodstream, and some portion of what you eat or drink appears in your breast milk. If you consume more than 400 mg of caffeine a day (about what you'd get in four mugs of coffee), it might affect your baby. That's why it's probably best to restrict your intake while breastfeeding.

Though one or two cups of coffee, tea, or cola isn't likely to affect either of you, more might make one or both of you irritable, jittery, agitated, and sleepless. If you want to have a cup or two of coffee or tea a day while breastfeeding, make a conscious effort to drink at least eight glasses of water every day as well (good advice whether or not you're taking in caffeine).

And if the caffeine seems to bother your baby, abstain for a bit until after you've weaned her to drink it again. If you decide you want to kick the caffeine habit, click here for tips.

Wanna know something? I drank skads of coffee and Aerro was a fussier baby. I quit and Aerro is soooo much a happier baby! Get that...I think it just might have an affect on them...

thanks for the replies...Thats useful info god, thanks for finding it for me  .

Madison doesnt seem to be affected by caffeine at all, shes a very laid back baby whether I drink it or not...I guess some children are more sensitive than others?

anyways, thanks again, Ill keep that info in mind.

Drink your coffee! Your baby will be fine. I drink 2 cups a day (approx 200mg) and Jackson is just fine with it. You can have 5- 5 ounce cups per day. I had to forfeit my body for 9 months, my vagina for 6 weeks, and now my boobs for 6 months (and counting) and I'm sure has hell not forfeiting my coffee!

You know, I really considered cutting out coffee because I was breastfeeding, especially reading how long it stays in your body on kellymom.com. However, after 9 months of obeying the rules to a 'T', I was ready for some friggin coffee. Especially considering how little sleep I was running on...I needed my cofee dammit! I do try not to drink too much, and most days I never have more than two cups - mostly because I just am too busy to be able to sit down and drink any, haha. Anyway, my son is a generally calm and happy baby and the caffeine doesn't seem to affect him whatsoever.
