I think your hospital was wrong. In most states you go through the office of vital statistics. In VA you have to pay and mail a form because the only office is in the state capital.

I had to pick my son's up at the courthouse. They don't mail them out here.

dont bother going to the hospital, they dont know where it is, it's sent out from the city hall. go to a city hall that has a vital records department. you can look up which ones do online, not all of them handle records though.
