I just found out yesterday

posted 17th Jul
that I am now a member of the gestational diabetes club  This is my 4th baby and my first time with this. I go sometime the next few days to meet with a dietition and to pick up my glucose meter. Then I have an appointment with my midwife next week. She didn't really give me any instructions just no sugar til we have all of our appointments. I'm so hungry but now have no idea what to eat. If anyone has any advice for dealing with this I would really appreciate it or if someone could give me a heads up to a thread on this that would be great too.

well its not the end of the world baby. just talk to ur healthcare provider about ur diet. it will leave as soon as u have the baby, but its a signal that u might develop diabetes later on in life so watch what u eat even after u have the baby. congrats on ur baby

Im an insulin dependant diabetic. Its hard to be diabetic and pregnant, but its manageable.

Try eating every two hrs....3 to 4 carbs for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and then 1 to 2 carbs for snacks (between breakfast dinner and at bed)

Carbs are registered in grams on food....each carb is about 15 grams (so 15 grams of carbs = 1 carb, 30 grams = 2 carbs etc)

Thats what I follow. Good luck

Hugs! It's not as bad as it seems..the big thing is no fruit in the morning and then you are limited to the amout of fruit you can have.
And of course no soda, candy, etc...that part sucks but it's doable.
Once you get your glucose meter and can start to monitor your levels it's becomes easier to see what you can and cannot eat. You will get a booklet that explains how much food, etc...

For me a typical day is breakfast: 1 cup of Special K with a cup of milk,
snack: 1/3 cup of plain yogurt or cottage cheese, or sometimes I have cheddar cheese with 3 crackers
Lunch: PB & J (sugar free jelly) on wheat bread with glass of water, or else grilled cheese sandwich
snack: 10 grapes or else a sugar free fudgecicle (YUM)
Dinner: Almost anything just in moderation.. Like 1 cup of spaghetti with 1 cup of meat sauce, or a piece of chicken with spinach and another veggie
I have found that I can have pizza but only 2 slices if I have 3 then my blood sugar gets too high, I have also found that I can eat out at Arby's etc...but again it's all in moderation
snack: 1 cup of milk with 2 sugar free cookies, Or else I can have 8-10 cherries or a small banana, etc...

Good luck and you will find it's not as hard as it first seems!

Anything sugar free or low sugar is good. Im a type 1 diabetic and I watch my carb intake. Not so much sugar anymore and it makes life so much easier. Just talk to your Dr or Nutritionalist.

Thank you for your input and support. I'm fairly confident that I will be able to handle all of this and do a good job. I guess I will feel better when I have my appointment with my midwife and get some questions anwsered and have a better idea of what is going on. But I am a bit concerned about what this means for the baby.

GD just means along with Type 1 Diabetes, or diabetes in general, there can be complications. The baby may get too big, it may make you go into labor early, the baby could have deformities, but I can maybe ease your mind.. Just do the best that you can, I know we all slip up and everything will go great. My first child I had was with uncontrolled glood sugars and she came out 3 weeks early and healthy as a horse. This pregnancy is going great at 19 almost 20 weeks but im more controlled. Good luck to you and if you need anything else, let me know.

Also know that your Dr will watch you and your baby. At every appointment I have to bring in my glucose results and they record them and go over them with me. And for the rest of my pregnancy I go in once a week to have an ultrasound and stress test done, to insure everything is going well with my little girl. They monitor her growth, the fluid levels, her movements, etcs....It really helps ease your mind

i really appreciate all the encouraging words  It is so nice to go here and know that you aren't the only one going through things. The support system is great here. I guess that is why I love it so much!
