Does this appointment schedule seem right?

posted 16th Jul
Please don't take this the wrong way. By no means, whatsoever do I think that I know more than my ob/gyn's PA. However, I was seen at 6 weeks. I run a risk for a cerclage and they did not schedule me for another appointment until 13 weeks. I will be given a PAP and an ultrasound to check the length of my cervix. The PA (who is a girl that I went to High School with) told me that cerclages are done at 16-18 weeks. I disagree. Cerclages should be done at 12-14 weeks and I think 13 weeks is too late to start "looking" for a problem. I was told 5 years ago that if I even had another child that I would more than likely need this....and that is one of the reasons that we put off having another child. I can't imagine going into this planned pregnancy only to miscarry to an incompetent cervix because my doctor was a little too lax. They gave me the schedule of my next several appointments. Aug 21 is the appointment I spoke of above, My next one isn't until NOV 10 which is 24 weeks and 4 days and they do not have me scheduled for an ultrasound. (I know this because they have 2 offices and the ultrasound machines are not in the office my appt is.) The next one is isn't until December 3 which is 27 weeks 6 days and I have to have a RhoGam shot at that appointment or I'm not sure that I would have gotten seen again so soon. I really like my Ob/gyn, but does this schedule sound right?? I am not comfortable with it. I want to be seen at 8-10 weeks, not 13 for the cerclage. I think that I should be monitored more closely regardless of whether or not I have to get it because my cervix is weak to say the least. I want an ultrasound at 20 weeks. How do I call the office and explain that I am not comfortable with this? I can't imagine that this is a "scheduling issue" with the office because there are 2 ob-gyn's, one mid-wife and one PA. They have 2 offices and just a year ago, they had one ob and one midwife. I am only seeing my ob at the Aug 21 appt. The rest are with the midwife. (I have no problem with this either, I really like her too.) I just have done so much of my own research that I don't agree w/ what the PA says.

just call and ask to speak to a nurse and voice your concerns. You have a right as the mother and patient to talk about and be a part of your care. Good luck!

can you call and speak with a member of the nursing staff and tell them your concerns?? i think its worth calling and trying to to push things up. let them know how nervous you are and how much you would appreciate doing everything a little earlier. it wouldnt hurt to try.

I went to the dr every 4 weeks starting at my first appointment and then at 32 weeks I went every 2 weeks, at 35 weeks i started every week cause i wasn't feeling well, and at 37 weeks i would have started going every week, but i had him at 37 and 1 day. I had my first ultrasound at 11 weeks and then at 17 weeks. You should talk to then if you feel it's not right.

if you dont agree with whats being said or done then tell your doctor and demand a change or get a new dr. thats the best advice i can offer. you'll never be happy if you just settle...

I have heard they dont ever do cerglages until after13 or 14weeks when the risk of miscarriage has been greatly reduced. I thought they put them in around 16 weeks normally, since the baby's not big or heavy enough to dilate your cervix until after that .... but I'm certainly no expert. You have every right to speak to your doctor about it and let him explain why he does them when he does.... and voice your concerns. Nothing wrong with that!

the aug- nov def doesn't seem right. you should be going at least every 4 weeks.

they may be right about the cerlage thing tho. just ask. you should have your anatomy u/s between 12 and 17 weeks i think and the second 18weeks -22. i may be wrong but there are certain tests that have to be done before a certain time or they can't be done at all.i hope this helps a lil bit

i was seen every four weeks.
if you are at risk for needing a cerclage you should be getting ultrasounds done early and continued i would imagine throughout. i was sent to get a cerclage at 20 weeks but the high risk doctor told me he didn't want to do it b/c the prime time to do it is 12 weeks.
i would find out why you don't have a better appointment schedule and if your doctor isn't willing to change it, especially with being told you would need a cerclage, you should switch doctors.
