Biracial/bilingual babies

posted 16th Jul
I guess the only thing that seriously worries me is when my little is born how the life I give him/her will go. I'm curious if there are any moms who have insight into the lives of biracial kids or bilingual kids ( or who are, themselves).
Or, give me advice on teaching an infant two languages!

I'm afraid of them (my future nenes) not speaking spanish. But, my husband and I only speak spanish to one another. I want them to be able to talk to all their relatives in Mexico. Should I just let my mom and my family teach the English to them and keep a Spanish speaking household?

do both... start by teaching both words... like with mydaughter i say, "besos" and she knows it means kisses, then i say in english "gracias for my kisses"

I know a lady who did that with her kids and none of them would say a full sentence in one language so it was difficult for those who didnt speak both to understand them.

Now...if everyone in the US would just get with the times and learn Spanish...

The issue I had was with these kids speaking english and spanish in the same sentence was in Germany because the Germans couldnt understand both together. I dont think anyone should be forced to learn a language they dont want to learn. I know some spanish but I have no desire to learn any more. The US is English. Why should everyone have to learn a second language if they only want one? I really dont think "getting with the times" means someone should speak both.

Well...everyone else speaks English! We might broaden our horizons. I don't think anyone's going to say Pakistan is English or China is English or Sweden is English. But, they willingly learnto speak it. Being able to communicate with people of a different culture and country is awesome! 100 % I would learn every language on the planet if I had the time, money, and brains!
Plus, there are bazillions of Spanish speakers learning English in the US. Alls I'm sayin' is it never hurt to learn.

Children pick up a second (or third or fourth) language so quickly, especially under the age of 5! My husband is fluent in Spanish (he isnt Spanish, but he was almost a Spanish major in college before he switched concentrations) and we had these grand plans of having our children be bilingual but, I dont know Spanish too well, and, so, our kids only speak English.

All this to say, go for it, there are so many studies out there that talk about how wonderful it is to teach them other languages so early in life and how it will relate to their future intellegence.

If they came to the US where the primary language is English then they SHOULD learn English. I went to Germany therefore I learned what German I could. No it wouldnt hurt and neither would learning any other language but I think saying the US needs to "get with the times and learn Spanish" just isnt right. Personally my son knows bits and pieces of 14 languages and my daughters understands 3 languages so I'm not against learning other languages but forcing one country to learn another country's language is not right.

'So when you were in Germany, you never asked for directions, consulted a doctor, ordered something in a restaurant in English?

If you read the two sentences you wrote above , they are a total contradiction. I'm not saying anyone should be forced, I was suggesting a subtle cultural movement towards bilingualism. All educated countries in the world encourage students to study and become fluent in other languages. We are a country that has tons of money that we *could* put towards education but, we don't! Oh well, there go our dreams of all of our children going to Harvard and Yale.
