Quoting Kate Did It:“ 'So when you were in Germany, you never asked for directions, consulted a doctor, ordered something in ... [snip!] ... we *could* put towards education but, we don't! Oh well, there go our dreams of all of our children going to Harvard and Yale.”

I tried to order and ask question in German or ATLEAST asked them in German if they happened to speak English (yes I asked that question in German). Also they are NOT contradictions to each other because if someone comes to the US where the primary langauge is English is those people should learn English. Forcing one country to learn another country's language is wrong so if you go to that country then you should speak THEIR language. Forcing a person who goes to another counrty to learn that country's language is perfectly fine because then they are no longer IN their country and should learn and respect the culture and traditions of the host country.

WE, as Americans, are mutts with cultural traditions as vast as the seas. We are a nation of immigrants, who once spoke many languages(and still does). We agreed upon English as our language when we still had a king. I don't suggest we force anyone to learn a darn thing. I simply suggest we learn to speak to the world, inside and outside of our borders.
I lived in Spain for a year and came back fluent (and I mean it) in Spanish. I totally respected the language and cultural tradition while I was there. I appreciate that I did because it has opened doors to love, family, friendship. It has greatly helped my business. It has enhanced my life and has done not one ounce of damage to anyone.
Learning is good for you.

My cousin's husband is from Jordan and both of their children are taught both English and Arabic. I don't know how successful that is going because I haven't seen them in years but the dad's first language is Arabic and mom's is English.
