cord blood banking

is anyone going to bank your babies cord? I want to know how much it cost because i watched a program on it and i requested info on it and i definitely want to do it but i assume it is very expensive. the info kit i recieved from viacord did not include prices. what are your opinions on it?

I am... My dad is paying for it, as a gift to my hubby and I....I think its like $1,000+, but they have payment plans and stuff like that!

I'd LOVE to bank my baby's cord blood but its so rediculously over-priced! I think it costs around $10,000 or something stupid like that... if i had that i'd bank it for sure but we're kinda broke : S

I don't have any risk factors in my family or my hubby's for anything it cures and we couldn't afford it even if we wanted to save it *just in case*. We were talking about it the other night though and I plan to call Viacord and ask if they have programs where people can donate cord blood. I figure I might as well give it to someone else if we won't be using it. If nobody is a match, maybe they can just use it for research or something.

oh ok. i didn't know you could do that.. thats a good idea... i mean even if we never have to use (and i'm praying we wouldnt) it'd be just good to have- just in case...

i checked into it too. its an initial cost of 2000-something which can be made in payments starting at the baby's delivery... you can also set up a registry where people can help you save the money. There is also a storage fee that they will charge you yearly.

I really wanted to do this for my baby since she is my first and i have a terrible feeling that if i don't, something will happen where I will go back and say "i shoud have done that"... but honestly, i just cant afford it.

its really a good thing though because if you are planning on having other children, this baby's cord blood can be used to help them too. check on the viacord website, they have some good info. : )

The actual inital banking is somewhere around 2.000 dollars and then there is a yearly fee after that!! I've done some reasearch, and a lot of times the babys aren't even able to use their own cord blood...
Instead my boyfriend and I have decided to donate our daughter's cord blood. We don't want it to go to waste, and we are definitly supporters of stem cell research!! Plus, it will for sure help somebody who needs it, and hopefully if she ever needs it one day their will be some for her from another generous baby.
