6th formula

posted 15th Jul
I got a call from my cousin who has a baby boy that is a month old. they are on their 6th formula and nothing is working. he is still cranky not sleeping and is just overall fussy. when she was pregnant with him she became lactose intolerant, but after he was born the intolerance subsided. it has been determined that it was the baby that was allergic to milk. does anyone have any suggestions that might help

I dont know but what to tell you but I do know that switching formula is hard on a baby and they need to try one for at least a week or two before switching. 6 in one month is a whole lot and very hard on the babies stomach.

Breast feed, that would probably help him a ton

My cousins baby is really sensitive to milk she's on similac soy(i think its similac)...tell her to try a easy digest one made specially for infants with sensitive tummies. Also tell her soy is a good idea, they make easy digest ones in soy

My boyfriend's sister had a lactose intolerant baby, and they had to switch her to very expensive formula... but I wouldn't know the brand. Sorry I"m no help.

breastfeeding would have been the best option... but I think that this formula has worked for a friend of mine who has a son with some digestive probs:

I was told to feed them on it for 2 weeks and give it another week/week and half to see any difference. Also the baby might not be feeling full on plain formula causing him to get fussy...duno but its something to consider...

Not everyone CAN breastfeed. I for one could not, I had a breast reduction and my milk never fully came in. I tried for about a week and my baby was losing too much weight so I had to finally give up. I did everything and it didn't work and this does happen to some people....also it may have been her choice not to, you never know.

I agree with someone else. That is a lot of formula changing in a short period of time. Is her pedi aware and is he advising her to do such? It seems excessive.....Or is she just trying all kinds hoping her baby settles down? Some babies are just fussy and sometimes they are cranky.....the formula might not be the problem with just the symptoms you listed.......is he constipated? having the runs? Is he gassy?

Has she tried the baby on soy, or lacto free formula?

Also, the doctor told me the formula isn't going to work in one day! give it time ! Atleasta 1.. 6 formulas in one month, is nearly two a week!

While I agree that yes, some women can't breastfeed (a situation like yours definitely can effect it).. it's only about 2 % of the population that truly cannot.. many women have "insufficient milk syndrome" despite the fact their babies are growing properly..

It is everyone's decision to make for their own children and she may have chosen not to and didn't feel it wasn't the BEST for HER baby. I think my baby is perfectly healthy getting formula and although I wanted to breast feed at first my intentions on that were to give her the first supply and then stop when I went back to work......I feel that would have been the best decision for me. Some women are just not into breastfeeding, It has its pros and cons for some women.
This may or may not even be this persons reasonings or situation at all but my point is that when someone asks a question about feeding and formula, not everyone should chime and and say to breast feed, because not everyone wants to and that is FINE......

I understand that.. I agreed with the suggestion of breastfeeding because it is easiest on a babies digestive system, and it would be a good option to consider for a child that is having such issues.
