US Citizenship & marrige question

posted 15th Jul
So I'm pretty sure I've never seen this posted on here before...
To cut a long story short my friend who is from Africa came over to the US when she was younger. She came over on a 3 month leisure visa otherwise known as a W2 Visa Waiver.
Now, 7 years later she's still in the US but illegally. She's met an American guy whom she's been with for 4 years. They want to get married but are unsure of the stipulations. Does anyone know where we can find info in this? It's especially hard on their relationship seeing that she can't work - he's left to pay all the bills.
I guess she just wants to know if she can obtain a marrige certificate and get married and then how long it would take for her to obtain US citizenship.
Can she travel outside of the country and get back in on her passport if she's stayed her illegally?
Any help is appreicated.
Thanks

From what I've heard I would think that if she marries him, she will become a citizen... She wouldn't be able to travel outside of the country and come back... I'm not certain on the lengths of obtaining citizenship

I thought she would obtain citizenship...so she couldn't even go to Hawaii for a honeymoon?

You need to tell them to go talk to an immagration lawyer FIRST! They will explain everything they need to do.

My husband was illegal when I married him, so the immagration lawyer was able to do everything without him getting in trouble.

a nieghbor of mine was from Cananda and married a US sailor... she couldn't go home or move until they straightened out her visa or her american residency... something like that... she had been trying for 3 years to be a citezen(after getting married) and they were still dinking her around... good luck because even if they do get married, she will still have to wait... they do an interview thing I believe to make sure that they really love each other and it's not just to get a permenant stay in the US... Good luck to your friend.

They can marry, but due to recent changes in laws, since they are marrying past the last date of her legal stay here there is a pretty large fine, and she may be required to go back to her home country for a waiting period of a few months to one year. After she returns and gets her residency green card, she can apply for citizenship in three years(it is a minimum of five years if it is not due to marriage to a citizen).

I know in order to get married she will need an ID from her country AND a tax ID number. When they do get married the immagration lawyer can start the paper work for citizenship. It usually costs $1800 and takes about 2-6 months.

See my husband and I were lucky because we married before his visa expired so it was easier. We filed all of his immigration papers without a lawyer, and he got his green card in six months. The Only issue we have is that since we were married less than two years when he got his residency, he has conditional permanent resident status until July 2009 and we have to apply to remove his conditional staus and pay another smallish fee. A year and a half after that we are going to start the application process for his citizenship because he will have been a resident for three and a half years and married three minimum.
