constipated baby!

last night my 1 month old (in 2 days) woke up in a crying fit because it was so hard for him to pass his bowels. I almost cried because i know how much pain he was in. they were formed and not mushy so i was wondering what can i give him to make him not constipated anymore? oh.. and he only takes a poo once every 2-3 days. is that normal or also part of the constipation? thanks in advance

breast or bottle fed?

bottle fed

my doctor said no more than 2 days for formula fed and 7 days for breast fed. if no bm in 2 days or signs you are speaking of you need to take action. you can try a warm bath. you can try getting a thermometer and putting some vasaline on it and sticking it up the bum to stimulate it. juice is an option (like the ones in the baby isle like apple prune, but i dont like that option, especially given the age). the only thing that worked for my daughter told to do by my pedi was to get glycerine (sp) suppositories and stick it up their bum. i always cut it in half since they are so itty bitty. works like a charm.

the problem got a lil better once we started solids but depending on what solids we feed her we still have to do it. before solids we had to do this every other day.

if you have frys grocery store they sell the kroger brand there for like 2 bucks for 25. pretty darn cheap.

my doc told me to put karo syrup in her bottle cuz she is constipated a lot... it works too

my doc told me to do this with my daughter too...put a teaspoon of dark karo syrup in her bottle twice a day (am bottle and pm bottle) good luck1

Karo syrup is basically corn syrup, like molassis. You can get it in the baking isle of the grocery store. It is safe, my pedi suggested it for my daughter when she was about the same age as your baby. and it does work!

you might have to try it a couple times before it kicks in though. a teaspoon in her bottle...no more than twice a day

no it is not safe....there is bacteria in it

My pedi told me to do either karo or the suppositories...I tried the Karo bc the grocery store I went to did not have the supp. so I had to get karo...it worked, but he screamed while passing the BM. It does work, but dont give it too often or they can get dirahrea(sp?)
