Burning red diaper rash!

posted 15th Jul '08
So Emily has had diarrhea off and on for 2-3 weeks now. I told her doctor of my concerns at her appointment Monday afternoon but he said it was nothing to worry about since she only poops 2-3 times per day.... I don't know though. I asked if it could be the cows milk and he said it usually makes babies constipated if anything... so I guess I will wait and see another week or two.

I also read that toddlers get "toddler diarrhea" that can last up to age 4, so...

Tonight though, OMG! She had a realllllllly watery one and I had no idea until about 20 mins ago when she woke up screaming in pain. She was screaming in pain before she finally fell asleep earliertonight butI thought it was teething or reaction from her shot from yesterday. I thought to check her diaper but didn't since it didn't feel or look wet from the outside.

I should of known. I feel so awful! When she was screaming in pain earlier she would not let me hold her and kept going to the floor, laying on her tummy, and screaming. It really started to scare me and I was so upset that I didn't know what was wrong. We finally took her out in the car and drove around and she conked out...

But gosh, I should have known... put two and two together, derrrr. When she just woke up this time and I did check, it was so bad she wouldn't even let me wipe her, so I went straight for the diaper rash cream and piled it on. She fell right to sleep as soon as I started putting it on her. I just keep thinking it would not have been so red or painful for her had I just checked earlier, so I feel even worse.

Poor baby girl

My daughter gets it so bad that her skin blisters and gets infected
Try and let her have some Diaper free time during the day and keep up with the cream even between changes

Aw, poor little girl and poor you. Don't beat yourself up over it. She'll be fine soon and how were you supposed to know. Like the other poster said, just try to give her diaper free time tomorrow and lots of Penaten (or Sudocream - I think I prefer that stuff. It seems to work faster).

well if she has diarrhea and cows milk makes babies constipated...then i would go with that! it could just balance things out for her system. for future changes- just use warm water not soap or soapy wipes because it burns rashed bottoms. u prob already know that but, a little reminder never hurt anybody! lol

Don't beat yourself up over it, you didn't know! I am sure we have all made that mistake before.

As someone posted give her some free diaper time and let it air out! that & the cream always worked for my daughter!

Hope her bum feels better

Well, she's been having cows milk for a month now and no constipation so far, so... ugh. I wish it did make her poop harder though.

So instead of starting a new thread I wanted to ask in this one first... I have been doing some reading because I am just not going to settle for the answer that her diarrhea could be "toddler tummy" and last until age 4. I don't think that is the case.

I am upset that her doctor didn't ask me more questions and investigate more when I did bring it up to him, so I am going to try and fix this on my own I guess.

Like I said in the OP, it has been going on for about 2-3 weeks. She gets cows milk each day and other dairy products. She had dairy products for a while well before turning 1 and no diarrhea from them, so this leads me to believe she is having a reaction from the cows milk. I have already ruled out that she is not allergic since she does not have the other two symptoms of a milk allergy. I think she may just have a sensitivity to it so I want to try other milks out, like soy.

Has anyone tried soy milk and what brand would you suggest? Other types of milk I could try?

I appreciate the help and suggestions! I hope I am right, which I think I am. I do not want my poor girl to have diarrhea every day, several times a day along with the painful burning diaper rash she gets at every diarrhea diaper.

Anything else new in her diet ??
My son had acute diaper rashes (burning red with blister and blood)for about 1 year.Started when he has about 14-16 months. We felt like we were torturing him every diaper change. We tried all the creams, home-remedies (some are good to sooth), airing his butt out,his doc even prescribed him antibiotic cream. In the endwe switch from disposable to cotton diaper and within1 weekit was almost all gone. We did the cotton diapers for 5 months (until he realised that he could take it off (ha ! ha!)) and now, he's in pull-up or easy-up and is rash free. We still don't know why he got those rashes. I'm just happy it's over.

Hi! So, just wanted to let you know that my youngest has had the same thing for a week and a half, and don't feel bad mama - She woke up in the middle of the night screaming, and I tried putting her back to bed! Finally realized it was a pain cry (she's 7 months) - anyway, I have something that work awesome.
#1 - Malox. it's an acid burn, and Malox works like a charm.
Good luck!

Only the cows milk is new and was started within the last month, which is when the diarrhea started to appear.

Its funny, no one around me believes me about it... that I think the cows milk is causing her to have diarrhea. My mom is totally convinced it is brought on from her teething, but she isn't constantly drooling or having to gnaw on things like she does when a tooth is about to erupt.

My fiance is saying "WTF? Why does she need soy milk? Or milke at all?Just don't give her any milk!"

And of course the doctor dismissed my concerns.

I'm just frustrated that no one believes me and expects my daughter to just have to deal with having diarrhea until who knows when.

Anyways, by cotton diapers, do you mean reusable ones? Or do they make special disposable diapers that are cotton? I would love to know. I have always disliked the idea of reusable diapers because I don't want the hassle of having to wash them, lol... but am considering if they would at least help the diaper rash stay away.

Destiny just had the same burning red rash for about a week... she wouldn't let us wipe her, cryed in the bath, it was horrable!! I took her to the doctor to find out that she had an allergic reaction to the grapes she was eating... which caused her pee and poop to burn her!!! I would take her back in if it stays!! Good luck!!!

In my son's case, he didn't have diarrhea but he wouldpoop a little bit at a time because he was too afraid that it would hurt. So he ended up going like every 20 mins and so we had to change him every 20mins. Arrrr it was bad. About the cotton diapers, they're reusable one. They go in the washer (cold water) and drawer. It was a hassle at first but you getuse it.
To help soothe her botton you can put some corn starch in her bath water. Also here're a few of the things we tried:
- polysporin
- all the Zinc cream. We found one that we like it's called D'iles paste
- olive oil, vitamin E and zinc cream (recipe from a nurse)
Also, if you want to check if its the milk, stop giving it to her for 2-3 days and see if it makes a difference.
