Josiah update

SO ask you all know i had Josiah on 7-08-08 at 24wks. He is doing really good. His eyes were fused but today while i was talking to him he opend em up. He is absolutly adorable. I would have taken some pics but since he just opend em up i decided to wait. He is almost a week old and such a little fighter. There was so much information that i had in mind but its way to much to remember. He started his feedings today. Hes only getting a little at a time but mommys milk is the best.

YEAH! So happy he is doing so great!

Oh how tiny he must be!! I hope he gets big and strong fast!!

Congrats though, he looks absolutely perfect!!

I'm curious as to what the doctors are doing to help him? My cousin has a funeral tomorrow for his baby, who was born last Friday at almost 23 weeks. The doctors didn't even try to save him in any way, they just let them hold him until his heart stopped beating..which was 58 minutes later..I don't understand why they didn't at least try to help him.

I also have a daughter that was born at 24 weeks! Congrats! He is so cute!!! Opening his eyes is such a big step!

Sadly its because they dont consider the baby Viable under 24 weeks, im so so sorry

They do that with babies under 24 weeks, but ive discussed it with my doctor and ive told him if my baby is past 20 weeks he better fight like hell to save my baby!! He agrees...

That's crazy. 2 weeks really may not have made that much of a difference. This baby lived nearly an hour without taking a breath, so they said. I was there for the whole labor and I understand that he had a very slight if any chance at being normal and thriving but to do nothing? I was just kind of mad..I'm glad your baby is doing well though! Hopefully he grows fast and gets healthy enough to go home with mommy soon=)

a chance is a chance tho right? i would have been pissed... im so sorry for the loss, and hope Josiah gets strong fast OP!

yeah my water broke at 23wks and they went over what would happen if i would have had him. At 23wks they are to small to handle the machines. They are considerd not viable. Once you hit 24wks thats when its viable. My little man waited 2 days past 24wks to come. I was in labor for 3 days before they caught it. Which in a way i am glad cuz when i started having contractions i was 23wks along. i had a cerclage that had to get taken out as soon as they realized i was in labor. Thankfully hes okay. When they explained why they couldnt intervine if i would have went into labor the week i went in i was so scared.

I'm so sorry your family had to go through that. It really depends on the hospital. Obviously some do save babies before 24 weeks because there are preemies born at 22-23 weeks who have survived. I'm sorry your cousin's baby was not in a hospital where this is practiced. The doctors may have also felt that there was another contributing factor besides prematurity that made saving the life not feasible. Incredibly sad none the less =(

OP, I'm glad to hear that little Josiah is doing well and has started his feeds. I don't blame you for not remembering all the information, the NICU is kind of a blur! Hang in there and keep us posted. We're always here for support.
