Breastfeeding in public

posted 14th Jul
I hate breastfeeding in public so usually I carry a bottle with milk I pumped before I go. I'm still new at it and not so good at it but I don't want to be restricted to going in my car or using a bottle to feed my baby. I tried using a blanket to cover up but usually it either falls off or I have to stick my head under it too tohelp the baby find my nipple and latch on properly. How do you ladiesdo it when you go in public? I was thinking ofbuying one of those ponchos but their so expensive!

Well I don't breadfeed yet obviously because I haven't had my baby, but I've been thinking a lot about this. I plan on maybe sneakin into a dressing room or something when I have to do it, or just going back to the car which sucks. I don't know if it will be necessary to buy the big poncho things bc eventually with practice you'll get better at it. But I'm interested in replies as well.

I would put the blanket over my shoulder and use my hand to help Rebecca latch. I just take bottles with me now. Its so much easier.
I used to have people that would stare at me, but it doesnt bother me. If they accidentally get a glimpse of my nip it wont bother me....everyone has nipples, some people even have three.

you can get a nursing tank top and then when you pull your shirt up the tank top still covers down below, then pull the tank top flap down just far enough to get the baby on and everything is basically covered when the baby is latched. i am not scared to bf in public anymore. the more you do it the easier it gets. you could also buy one of those nursing covers if you want. i always feel bad covering lylian up though she gets all hot and sweaty. if you act uncomfortable with it most liekly others will too. just start out small like in the park or in a nursing room at a store just to get used ot not beign at home doing it. and gradually start doing it in places with more and more people.

The best piece of advice I got was to practice in front of a mirror.
I not only perfected my "technique", but I was also able to realise that I dont flash as much as I thought I did. People can't really see all that much.
I now BF everywhere.

Good Luck!

you're supposed to be able to easily breastfeed in public w/ this wrap. obviously I don't breastfeed yet b/c I don't have a baby yet, but if your uncomfortable just "whipping it out" I thought this might be of help. Good luck!

yeah thats what happened when I did it last time. People just sit and stare. my boyfriend would freak if he saw. he's still not comfortable with it yet.

I've had to do this in the most wierdest places like Mc Donalds with people starring at me and not they're sandwiches!! I admit at first I hated it but later I remembered why I was doing it. I believe that some maternity stores have shirts and throw overs that are cheap. Try Mootherhood Maternity they should have something that will make you more comfortable.

take people staring as a compliment. theyre prolly studying how you do it, or they are thinking back to when they breastfed. if they are thinking, "ewe gross" then they are not worth your time because bfign is a beautiful thing, and i would never think bad of a person for doing something so natural.

Chris used to worry about how he'd feel about my breastfeeding in public. He didnt want other people to see my breasts, but now he says "They're breasts, they're designed for babies to eat from." He gets mad when people stare at me, but he knows it doesnt bother me so he tries to keep his cool. He used to sexualize breasts alot, but now that he sees the functioning part he more or less "respects" them. If that makes any sense   He's no longer offended by other women breastfeeding like he used to be.

there was a lady at the zoo yesterday who sam said he saw from the corner of his eye at this live animal show we went to, and he said she whipped it right out there, all the way out and had the baby on it. she didnt care. he was a little weird about it later and i was like "well i dont care either and i feed her in public" and he said "at least you try to be discreet about it though"

I'm discreet when Ive done it, but if a woman just pops her boob out, it doesnt bother me at all. In fact I wish that it were more socially accepted to just whip it out.
