At what point of dilation or effacement do they admit?

posted 14th Jul
Okay so I had a doctor’s appointment on the 10th, last Thursday, and my doctor checked my cervix. He told me that I was dilated to a 2. He didn’t mention if I was effaced or not. So after my appointment it seemed like it had made me have contractions just for that next day. All weekend long I never felt them again. Sunday me and my husband went fishing and on the way home I started having bad sharp pains in my vagina. They were happening about 6 times every minute. I had no idea what it was. So I took a bath and a nap to see if that would help and it did. Well until I got up and started walking around again. My husband really wanted me to call and see what it was. When I called the doctor on call he told me to come up and get checked. Well I had to be in pain to go to the hospital. It takes us 45 minutes to get there from where we live. When I got there they hooked me up to all the machines to check and see if I was contracting. They also checked me urine, cervix, and to see if I was effaced. The urine was negative, they thought I had a UTI, then they checked my cervix, still dilated to 2, then they checked the effacement, they said I was 60%. They said that the pain was from the baby’s head hitting my cervix. But my question is, how far dilated or effaced do you have to be before they admit you? I’m sure they admit people at different times, but is there a certain point where they like you to be in the hospital. I’m scared I’ll be past the point of epidural, but I know the doctor is there to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Any advice? I go back Thursday and kind of scared they are going to admit me

They usually will not admit you until you are a 4, unless your water breaks.

Editted to add - I wouldn't be too concerned about not getting there in time for an epi. This is your first baby and labor will more than likely take a long time. You will be in major pain long before you hit 8 (and therefore at the hospital), which is usually when they refuse you an epi.

My hospital told me I had to be at a 4 or my water had to break....which kind of sucked b/c I was at a 2 and having contractions every 40 seconds! and then my water broike, so it was all good

I have the feeling that i will stay dilated at 2 for some reason. I guess becuase i havent had but only a few contractions. But my doctor is soo eager to get my baby here. He is going on vacation at the end of the month so he has me scheduled to be induced on the 29th if i havent gone on my own by then. He seems to think that i will though

I stayed at 2 cm and 75 % effaced for 2 weeks.
I was admitted at 3 cm but my water had broke 45 minutes prior to my arrival at the hospital.
I would not have gone home had they told me to!! The pain gets really intense once your water breaks and I turned into a demon.

I am due on the 29th and was 2cm and 60% effaced on the 2nd. My doctor told me you can stay that way for a while. It is the 14th and still no baby. My last check up I was still 2cm and 60% effaced. With my son I did not go to the hosptial until I was 7cm they had to break my water. The unknown is scary but you will know when you are in labor. The contractions are consistant in timing and gradually get closer together and more intense. They do not let up by walking or changing postitions. Best of luck to you.

I'm sure i'll know when i start contracting more. My doctor said that i had been contracting and i didnt even know it. When they strip the membranes is there normally alot of blood at that time or just a little bit after?

It doesn't matter how much you are dilated or effaced..it depends on if you are contracting enough to progress...my first i was dilated 4 and they still sent me home..i was contracting but not enough to change my cervix any more...they finally broke my water on the 3rd day of labor and he was here in about 4 hours..w/ my second, i went in and i was dilated 2 and 70%..i was contracting really hard but it was like my cervix was stuck..so they had me walk a bunch, nothing..then the midwife stripped my membranes and stretched my cervix to a 4..i had her in about 3 hours..w/ my 3rd, i was stuck at 3 for about a month..made many trips to the hospital..false labor sucks..but they didn't keep me until my water started leaking....so all labors are different, and how far you have dilated doesn't matter (unless obviously you are fully dilated).it is how much you are contracting and if the contractions are doing anything...or like w/ my labors, they always needed a little push to get me contracting more.

oh and it depends on who strips your membranes..some are a lot rougher than others..you want them to be rough with it..make sure they really pull the bag away..and if you have mucousy blood, it is a very good sign..doesn't always mean labor is gonna start, but a good indicator it will.

After i left the hospital last night with false labor, i noticed alot of blood. I was wearing gray gym shorts and it was worse then a menstural cycle. Scared me at first but i could still feel him moving around

Oh, you will for sure know the difference. I was having pre-term contractions since about 30 weeks, so I was worried I wouldn't know.
When the real ones came I knew it! I kept telling my husband...I think we might be going tonight!!! He was like "oh, your fine". Then my water burst out of me right in front of him, and he was like "YES"..all excited.
In childbirth class they taught us to base them on having a conversation. If it is difficult for you to focus and stay on point while talking on the phone or in person-that might be cause for concern.
