Dilema over dog fight - opinions needed

posted 13th Jul
My SIL is out of town and my inlaws are watching her dog. Well today we went to the house for dinner and brought our dog. like we do every Sunday. My SIL's dog attacked ours. She had too many puncture wounds to count ...The doc stopped counting at 10! We took her to an emergency vet and after $265 , ( a small price to pay to know that she is alright) she is home with us, very drugged up, but home.
Now here is the dilema. My inlaws dont think that we should tell my SIL about the incident. ( The dog has attacked others before, so she would not be suprised) However my SIL is pregnant and stressed about an upcoming move. My MIL thinks that telling her will result in either her being extremey upset about what her dog has done ( They just recently lost their other dog) or she will be angry that we put our/her dog in that situation knowing that her dog has attacked before.
I guess I am just wondering what you guys think? Should we tell her or not? ( This is not about the money, Id gladly pay any price to know that my dog is okay)

If she is pregnant, I would tell her about the incident. What if the dog attacks her baby some day (God forbid), but that dog should go!

I would tell her. Cause if she is pregnant and bringing a new baby into the house around a dog that attcks could be bad especially if she just lost another dog and if she had those dogs together than that dog could be in denial or depression I know it sounds weird but the dog could be reacting to what just happened and is now angry. So I would def. tell her.

I wouldn't as long as her dog is okey and doesn't have any injuries. She is already aware of the problem. I hope your puppy is okay. What type of dogs are they?

hm...tough one. Really tough....I can see both sides.

Maybe play it down? Like, "Well, we know so-and-so bites, but we thought she knows our dog so it'll be okay. Boy were we wrong. I just thought I'd let you know so you didn't worry when you see our fur baby next time."

This is an even better idea!

We have a yellow lab, she is actually 9 and this was her first fight, she was so scared it broke my heart! We know that both dogs are up to date on shots, But teh vet hospital still has to report the situation. They will contact us though, not my SIL. So I am just trying to figure out if I should respect my inlaws wishes or not.

I think this would work too, now convincing my inlaws is the tough part. I might just bite the bullet and go against what they want...just for everyones safety...my SIL already has 2 little ones at home.
Thansk for the advice ladies!!

I agree with CatLuvr. Let her know, but don't make a huge deal out of it. Just kind of off-handedly mention it when you see or talk to her next.

And to those equating a dog attacking another dog and a dog attacking child, there is a HUGE difference. Just because a dog attacks another dog doesn't mean it will be aggressive towards kids. I have known many, many, many sweet dogs who hate other dogs.

I agree, I really dont believe that their dog would ever hurt their children, she adores them. But I do understand how that would raise some concerns.
Thanks!

I would tell her....dogs who attack other animals have no business around pregant ladies or babies...

We had a similar situation a while back ago with a couple dogs in my moms neighborhood. They started attacking other dogs..then it escalated into them killing other dogs. (started off with just one dog doing the attacking then it got it's siblings in on the action)
The whole litter ended up being put to sleep after the death of two dogs and the attack on two humans.

That is true but things could happen. And I wouldnt want to take the risk. Especially with a new baby on the way. But nothing could ever happen. But still even then dont take the risk.

Well Ladies , I told her today ....and if you can believe it, she is mad at us!She doesnt feel that we should have brought our dog over, blah, blah, blah.....anyway, I love her dog and I dont want anything to happen to him...but today I found out that my dog is the FOURTH dog that he has attacked!!!!!!

I am not quite sure how to feel about this whole situation. I am constantly reminding myself that she is pregnant and sometimes the hormones get the best of us...but mad at us???? That doesnt really make much sense right???
